we heard a lot of talk that it might have been betty fox, mother of terry fox (who died of cancer while trying to run across canada with only one leg). there was supposed to have been a halogram of terry beside her while she lit the torch.

that would have been pretty cool too but, i agree, gretzky was a spot-on choice, a great sportsman with a heck of a lot of class.

Betty Fox was one of the six carrying in the Olympic Flag I think along with Anne Murray, Bobby Orr, Donald Sutherland and a couple others I don't remember.

I'm a little embarrassed about the opening ceremony really... compared to the Chinese, this show was a farce!. display token natives, have em dance around and add a few neon bulbs(northern lights) add a monologue about some deer and polar bear meeting up with a beaver over snow drifts noway swear to gawd if there was an icon with a friggin bag over it's head I'd put it right here >>>

I'm fierce about Canadian identity and these western morons put up a public display of comedy and ridicule.

Nelly Furtado had the curves going on tho!

I never expected the show to compare to Beijing. It was done on 1/10th the money. The China spectacle was to show off-it would be silly for B.C. to spend that amount of money.

I found it more personal to learn about the country. I felt bad when one of the cauldron legs didn't work properly. For what was spent I thought the show was just fine. I did get a better understanding of the cultures in British Columbia after watching it.

I thought the opening ceremony was just right

they said they couldnt compete with the pagentry and awesomeness of the Chinese so they went the opposite way and tried to make it small and intimate

like the difference between a stadium rock concert and and a small show in a night club

and I think they carried it off really well. the cauldron stand didnt work. so what? the show went on

but Bob and Doug would have been cool. they could have looked at the broken cauldron and said "Take off hoser" with Geddy Lee in the background going "coo coo coo ca coo coo coo"

No I was thinking more of a massive fountain of maple syrup where Paul Gross would emerge from it in his mounties outfit and wooo the cheering fans. Uh sorry but if you're going to host the Olympics?

THE WORLD IS WATCHING!

Kudos to Bilodeau for olympic gold!

Hi pkd,

The "culture" they showed is 300 yrs old and nowhere near what it is today... I compared the show to the Chinese opening ceremony when in fact, BC has lost control of the territory TO THE CHINESE. Truth is we still stomp on natives rights, you need to speak mandarin if you work in call centers and our natural resources are being squandered off and sold to China.

end of rant.... Go Canada Go!

speaking of true canadian culture, the latest gold medalist, jon montgomery, men's skeleton, is typical and i'm just grinning from ear to ear every time i see him in an interview, especially as he's chugging golden beer trying to auction it off.

kudos to him and his victory flowerforyou
