which is better, for a person planning to compete in mma?

Both, really. Muay Thai practices eight points of striking; feet, knees, hands, and elbows...Brazilian Ju-Jitsu practices submission and ground control even when at a disadvantage. Gracie Ju-Jitsu is top-notch, check that out. As for Muay Thai, you can really get screwed if you get into the wrong gym and they don't teach you proper foot placement and how to put your full body into a knee.

I guess it depends on what kind of MMA fighter you want to be, stand-up or ground and submit?

i rather do stand up but submit is cool too. I guess than Muay Thai it is! i figure if i take that and boxing i will have a solid mma background enough to compete.

yeah so since muay thai is like foreign boxing i will do that instead of american boxing and take taikwando and maybe some form of wrestling, aikido or judo as my 3rd discipline.

Go for Muay Thai and see if you can find a Sambo trainer. I wouldn't bother much with taking any boxing or kickboxing, just stick to Muay Thai since it incorporates everything from boxing to kickboxing and then some.

Sambo is brutal though, Russian military hand to hand combat.smokin

but back to the origianl question

Brazillian Jiu Jiutsu is pretty bad azz

I always dug the Gracies

but with the modern MMA they have that stupid stand up rule which kinda negates that cause the Brazillian style Jiu Jiutsu mostly works best from the floor on your back

I'd go for Judo personally, but it depends. Judo is a good defensive technique and quite similiar to Sambo with the trip takedowns and tosses. You could also go with Ju-Jitsu if you want to have somewhat of an advantage when your opponent is on top of you (can end the fight if you are good enough, whereas Judo is about reversing the position and gaining an advantage from bottom to top). I don't know much about Aikido or Taekwondo, so I can't really say about either of those.

Wrestling is good, but terrible in the same way. Good if you can stay on top, just awful if you ever find yourself on your back. I wouldn't go for wrestling, personally.

yah Judo is good

there is "soft" martial arts and "hard" martial arts

soft is mostly defensive and uses the opponents momentum and balance to deflect an attack

hard is offensive attack inflicting as much damage as fast as possible

Judo can be both so is a good choice to have in your bag of tricks

Sambo is good too

Go with Muay Thai, kickboxing has nothing to do with the other forms of striking...kickboxing is just hands and feet mainly.

Muay Thai and Judo, and train...for a really, really long time before you enter a fight. Also, I'd work cardio heavily, but that would probably be integrated into your training with the martial arts.

Thanks a lot so Muay Thai and Judo it is. And maybe a dash of aikido here and there. I bet if I train hard in those two I can become great one day and compete and maybe be on tv. I have a lot of heart.

That's good, but remember what you are getting into. This isn't some simple martial arts competition where you swing batons and do flips, you can, and more then likely will get injured. I wanted to do MMA as well, but I don't want to be a champ like Ali, great fighter...at one time...but where is he now? Keep that in mind, and if you have the devotion, and the heart for it, have at it.

I've known fighters that were top-notch in their respective art get one fight in an octagon and leave never to come back because the athletic commission told them they couldn't fight due to injury, be careful, it is a tough sport. Good luck.

Thanks i appreciate it. I just told my dad my plans about muay thai and judo minus my interest in competing in mma and ufc. He would be against that. He thinks it's inhumane. Anyways my dad told me to just focus on one art. I think i can handle taking two judo and muay thai at the same time.

I prefer K-1 to the american version of MMA.. I can't stand guys rolling around on the mat.. If I wanted to watch wrestling I would watch GLOW..
