So I just started using this site again and in the last two days I have been back I have gotten more hits from guys from different states and even countries than in my own backyard. My question is why would you try to get into a relationship with people who arent close to you??? Maybe they are just trying to be friends but I still find it odd I guess.

I found my boyfriend all the way across the country. I'd hate to think what I would have missed if I hadn't talked to him.

My first long term girlfriend was from Oklahoma and I from Maryland. We met on ICQ way back in the 90s and it lasted almost a year. These things have a way of working or not working depending on the people involved.

Good question! I'm always impressed with those who can do it. Wishful thinking perhaps?

And maybe how much each person is willing to try? I'm assuming finances give one some freedom. And strength of common interests?

I totally understand what you're saying. I never hear from anyone closer than 897,000 miles away....! I think people feel "safer" when they can comfortably assume there's no chance of ever meeting the person in real life.

It's the safety in numbers scenario -- as long as the numbers are very big, and correspond to the distance between you and the other person.

Makes it hard for those of us who would actually like to meet somebody....!

I've had many long distance relationships, one even with a woman from Japan. She came to live with me many times, and we'd be married today if the eastern culture didn't freak her out so much. Long distance relationships (marriages) statistically last longer because you know that the other person REALLY loves you, since they have gone through so much to be with you. With local relationships the other person can end the relationship in heartbeat because it's so easy to find someone else locally. The worst part of a long distance relationship is that it's hard when you want to be with the other person but you can't, but then absence makes the heart grow fonder.... flowerforyou

For guys, online romance is about starting out with baby steps - they first just need a female somewhere to acknowledge they're alive.
