so the problem is unemployment

can't find a job

and yet these old folks seem to be able to find jobs?

hmmmmmmmm...
easy they work for basically nothing, and they are mostly part time so no benefits

As a Florida retiree, with bills to pay, medical costs, car insurance, home insurance....all of which are some of the highest rates in the nation...I'm getting real tired of you referring to my friends and social peers as "they", as if we are a separate entity from other tax-paying, and social contributing humans in Florida. And by the way, as "retirees" we mostly DO have benefits...which we have paid into for years, such as Medicaid and SS...get informed.

I have NEVER seen a time where someone that REALLY wanted to work, couldn't find a job. MIGHT NOT be what they want, but they can/are working, making some money, till they find something better.

BEEN there, got the "sweat shirt."

even during Jimmy Carter's recession (which was comparatively MUCH worse than now) I never had a problem finding a job

my problem now is that I CAN'T go back to work

if I had a job I would lose more benefits than I could possible make up through working

I receive $1000 a month through private disability insurance and I receive $1000 a month through social security

If I were to go to work I would lose the private insurance payments

and social security only allows you to earn $900 a month before you lose those benefits too. I couldn't work around dialysis treatments three times a week enough to make that up

so I just sit on my azz and collect

theres alot of retired people that dont need to work cause they have plenty of money but they work cause they are basically bored i guess of playing golf everyday, but i got to thinking why wouldn't they be considerate and allow people who really need that job more than they do ,have it?
Now let me say that this isn't a small amount of elderly doing this its a huge amount of elderly doing this..i'd like your thoughts on this

Geezer here.
Perhaps the older ones are willing to do what the
younger turn their noses up at.
You know, that lame mentality that a job is a job, if you need one.
Willing to be there graveyard.
Using public transportation.
Giving up time for cash.
Yeah.
They are just torturing the young..

and a common problem I see is

the younger generations seem to have this sense of entitlement

somebody owes them a job. they don't seem to have the attitude of the strong survive. someone has taught them that they deserve to live the same lifestyle that their parents worked and sweated blood for forty years to achieve and they seem to think that they automatically get to live that lifestyle without having to work or sacrifice to get there

Older people work because they believe in doing something benefical EVERY day. It is a point of pride. Retirement is a bill of goods, sold to the public to hasten death. Activity & achieving things keeps you alive & PROUD of yourself. I NEVER want to retire & if the young want a job, go earn it. There are plenty of jobs out there, go EARN one.

drinks This coming from someone who also is in Fl. It takes ambition. Don't say others are taking your jobs(unless you're speaking of china.) Create your own, start a trade or other business to provide for yourself.
Most of your small bussinesses are started from people who were unemployed and desperate. I got sick of being unemployed. Thats why I became a landlord.

I completely agree with the Qman... My father(RIP dad) held onto his drivers licenseand worked till he was 82yrs...tough as nails but there was one thing he feared all his life... The fear of going without(again). My generation has had no hardships to speak of, well nothing that compares anyways.
we go through life soaking in historical facts but never the desperation of the past.

One poster suggested kids should go out and earn their stripes compete and prove their worth... sounds good on paper but everyone knows a CA is nothing without real life corporate experience under his belt. Will the elderly mentor the new generation or
keep them stupid and inexperienced?

If they're competing... what do you think?
