I hear people say all the time about how bad things are now and how worse people are in terms of their behavior. Young people are disrepectful, people are lazy, violence is up, etc. Do you think this is really true? And, I don't mean just looking back 50 years. I mean looking at human history as a whole. Are we really that different? People always complain, but there are definitely cycles to morality. When one generation rebels because the previous generation is too authoritarian, another generation will eventually rebel against the previous generation for being too libertarian. |

You chicks are a downer man! What's with your new pic? Change religions? Actually Miss Ruth, that is a "heartagram". It's the symbol the band HIM uses, and one they made famous. LOL! No religious issue here...I still believe in the religion of Goofdom! |

A very good observation. And very true. |

They just see all the BS and they are the generation who get to make changes. Our world is different, so naturally we are changing with it. |

Are we really that different? I know I've seen kids out and about and they seem to be very disrespectful nowadays compared to when I was a kid....As far as violence,it's down cause my Momma would smack the $h!t outta me if I dared to run my mouth like "kids" do now.... |

I remember when I was young ( a long time ago ) - a child had to work to earn a few cents to get what they wanted at the store..Now, it is uncommon to see kids actually put themselves out for someone or something...I see disrespect to their elders and irresponsibility. In the parents I see working mothers and fathers with no time to spend to sit down to dinner as a family or attend the many activites their child is in (if they are lucky and want to actually participate in curricular activities). Money was short when I was a child but now it is shorter and children are lazier..

it does kinda amuse me how the kids graduate high school and expect to move out and continue living the same life style that it took their parents thirty years to achieve

I think it's a mixed bag. Modern technology has given us the ability to SEE so much more of what's going on. That, and the changes in WHAT we are allowed to hear about.
We NEVER heard about most family crimes, such as child abuse when I was young...censorship kept tons of common bad human behavior out of the news. It happened all the time, as did people cheating on their spouses, etc. How much worse it is, might be more a matter of perception than reality. Throughout history there have been writers of stature who have 'tsked' about the decline of social values. The older you are, the less you tend to see some things as the 'spunkyness of youth', and the more you think the world's going to hell in an undersized handbag. Then there's the folks who want to believe things are getting worse, because it means that "the end is near, and we'll all go to heaven soon." The thing I MOST disagree with, is the kind of "it's not our fault" thinking behind blaming modern technology. That's ANOTHER claim that goes back to the first old cave man who blamed his grandson's misbehavior on the discovery of fire. "If we still had to go and hunt for fire caused by lightening strikes and volcanoes, the youth of today would have proper respect for the challenges I grew up with." So all in all, my answer is NO. Things are neither better or worse in general these days. There's always going to be ebb and flow to crime, due to changes in law, and to things like the weather (amazingly, most criminals don't like to go out in the cold rain, so crime falls whenever the early winter rains come). And yes, complaining that it's all going to hell IS a common indicator of advancing age. |
