In alot of cultures it is rude to make eye contact. I know I don't keep continual eye contact when I chat with someone.

I glance to make sure they are listening and we are on the same page. I don't do the thousand yard stare though.

some cultures believe it to be rude and aggressive to make and keep eye contact.
some people are too shy and feel uneasy
personally, i give great eye contact....especially if i'm interested in the person or what they are saying....well and even if i'm not!

Deja vu? I thought I answered this very same topic earlier today, and furthermore saw two people answer it in the first two answers the same way? What's happening here? ...Dzee Zweilight Zone... better pack it in for the night.

Just a average person,not a culture.
No eye contact,an it was seen as not talking to the person, that brought up the subject
They would answer the question, but it seem to be to the air,not to the person that asked!

Gee I don't know then, could be a lot of reasons, their upbringing or do this only with you. Also do they do this all teh time or only on certain subjects. I know you mentioned various subjects.

I guess the bottom line for me if it bothered me would be to ask them. Why can't you look me in the eye do I have a goober or sleep stuck in the corner or what???

For respect of the other party,i wouldn't convey my feeling, but observe.

if theres no eye contact with me while im talking to someone (assuming they are standing right infront of me ofcourse lol) then i walk away and dont talk to them anymore. i take their lack of no eye contact as them not interested in communication.

yes i realize that sounds rude of me but unless they havent made an effort to strike up a new conversation they wanna talk about then what the hell

Unforuntately, the eye-contact thing "can" be over-analyzed. Yes, it is sometimes useful and even conveys respect between two people, and sometimes may be used to determine if the other person is being dishonest. However, there is the physical attractiveness factor, or how verbally agressive they are being towards you, or just that they are long-winded and won't take a break to let you chime in with a response, any one of these may cause you to break eye contact from the person talking to you, or them to you.
