A very close friend of mine was murdered last week by his nephew.I don't
know how I'll feel about him getting the death penalty when I'm done
greiving my friend but right now I'd like to see the nephew get the
death penalty. It won't happen here in Canada.

If you murder someone I think you have forfeited any right you have to
your own.

anybody who hurts children shouldnt even get death row. i think they
should be taken out back of the court house the minute the trial is over
and shot. then left there to bleed to death slowly.

I'd love to ship the nephew to Texas.

in the ancient jewish communities families were allowed to take out
their own vengence on someone who murdered a family member. i say lets
bring that back.

there are exceptions to every rule. but if govt was firmer on the death
penalty it would be a deterrent murderers wouldnt be gettin out in 5
years to kill more people. they would be dead.

All I have to say is I don't agree with the death penalty. period.

I mean who are we to decide?

That's up to a MUCH higher powers than us.

It reminds me of the witch trials.

It is an old idea that should have been retired years ago.

Yes, it sucks that we pay for their living until they die naturally but
atleast our hands are clean when we pass on.

I agree with ya 100% songbird, unfortunately there doesn't seem to be
any better alternative than our currently horrible prison program.

i do not agree with the death penalty in any situation. beth, you said
it beautifully...

statistically, it's NOT been shown to be much of a deterrent, anyhow.

"Capital Punishment and Deterrence: Examining the Effect of Executions
on Murder in Texas. Authors John Sorenson, Robert Wrinkle, Victoria
Brewer, and James Marquart examined executions in Texas between 1984 and
1997. They speculated that if a deterrent effect were to exist, it would
be found in Texas because of the high number of death sentences and
executions within the state. Using patterns in executions across the
study period and the relatively steady rate of murders in Texas, the
authors found no evidence of a deterrent effect. The study concluded
that the number of executions was unrelated to murder rates in general,
and that the number of executions was unrelated to felony rates. (45
Crime and Delinquency 481-93 (1999))."

"Effects of an Execution on Homicides in California. Author Ernie
Thompson examined criminal homicides in Los Angeles before and after
California's execution of Robert Harris in 1992, the state's first
execution after a 25-year moratorium. Thompson found slight increases in
homicides during the eight months following the execution. (3 Homicide
Studies 129-150 (1999))."

"Homicide Rates Fall in Canada After Abolition of Death Penalty
The abolition of the death penalty in Canada in 1976 has not led to
increased homicide rates. Statistics Canada reports that the number of
homicides in Canada in 2001 (554) was 23% lower than the number of
homicides in 1975 (721), the year before the death penalty was
abolished. In addition, homicide rates in Canada are generally three
times lower than homicide rates in the U.S., which uses the death
penalty. For example, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice
Statistics, the homicide rate in the U.S. in 1999 was 5.7 per 100,000
population and the rate in Canada was only 1.8. Canada currently
sentences those convicted of murder to life sentences with parole
eligibility. (Issues Direct.com, 8/4/02)."

"States Without the Death Penalty Have Better Record on Homicide Rates
A new survey by the New York Times found that states without the death
penalty have lower homicide rates than states with the death penalty.
The Times reports that ten of the twelve states without the death
penalty have homicide rates below the national average, whereas half of
the states with the death penalty have homicide rates above. During the
last 20 years, the homicide rate in states with the death penalty has
been 48% - 101% higher than in states without the death penalty. "I
think Michigan made a wise decision 150 years ago," said the state's
governor, John Engler, a Republican, referring to the state's abolition
of the death penalty in 1846. "We're pretty proud of the fact that we
don't have the death penalty." (New York Times, 9/22/00)"
