ADL Says Glenn Beck's Outrageous Holocaust Comparison Part Of Troubling Epidemic On The Airwaves

"New York, NY, May 2, 2007… The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today denounced remarks by radio personality Glenn Beck where he compared efforts to raise awareness about global warming to Hitler's plans to exterminate Jews during the Holocaust, saying his remarks are part of "a troubling epidemic on the airwaves, where comparisons to Hitler and the Holocaust are becoming all-too facile."

On the April 30 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, Beck said: "Al Gore's not going to be rounding up Jews and exterminating them. It is the same tactic, however. The goal is different. The goal is globalization. The goal is global carbon tax. The goal is the United Nations running the world."

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director and a Holocaust survivor, issued the following statement:

Glenn Beck's linkage of Hitler's plan to round up and exterminate Jews with Al Gore's efforts to raise awareness of global warming is outrageous, insensitive and deeply offensive. Unfortunately, his remarks are just the latest example of a troubling epidemic on the airwaves, where comparisons to Hitler and the Holocaust are becoming all-too facile.

It has become almost commonplace for talk-show pundits to use comparisons to the Holocaust and Nazi imagery to attack people whose views they disagree with, whether the issue is global warming or immigration, as we witnessed when CNN's Lou Dobbs recently suggested on his program that immigrant rights groups use tactics similar to those of Nazi propagandists.

The six million Jewish victims and millions of other victims of Hitler deserve a measure of respect. Their deaths should not be used for political points or sloganeering. Every time a radio or television personality takes that unique event in history and twists it for their own political agenda, it cheapens the public debate and distorts and trivializes the Holocaust."

Of course, literally there is no comparison but are folks being too sensitive, maybe??

I don't mean to be offensive but comparisons are done all the time and I would definitely state, not accurately too.

Maybe I can't see the sensitivity of the issue.

As for Beck he is an idiot with an audience. Seems to be a rash in this country.

The ADL is a corrupt agenda. I don't like Glenn Beck, but I less like ADL. They are more of a propaganda group than a real "anti defamation" league.

Beck is such a coward that relys on the majority to say "do not be so sensitive" Beck meant exactly what he said-coward! Weak men are such disappointments!

Glenn Beck is a danger past yelling fire in a crowded theatre, he's organized the most racist and ignorant in our country and constantly promotes ignorances that may soon lead to violence...it's amazing to me that people actually believe his dog and pony show as some sort of reality.

Of course he's on POCKS NOISE which is not really a "news" organization, it's just a shill machine for a GOPer agenda of obstructionisms aimed against reforms (from the disasters from their reign) and for Big Insurance industry profits.

Opps, there was an updated report from the ADL:

Glenn Beck "Fearmonger-In-Chief": ADL
Fox News pundit blasted for being a gateway to extremism
By DANIEL MACHT
Updated 5:24 AM EST, Wed, Nov 18, 2009

Glenn Beck has been crowned big media’s King of Hate.

In a new report that warns of the potential for anti-government violence since President Obama’s election, the Anti-Defamation League singles out Fox News TV pundit and radio host Beck for “making a habit” of promoting anti-government conspiracy theories from his mainstream media perch.

“Beck has acted as a ‘fearmonger-in-chief,’ raising anxiety about and distrust towards the government,” the study’s authors write, reports the New York Daily News.

The ADL study cites instances where Beck has called President Obama “dangerous” and compared him to Hitler to argue the case that Beck may be putting his viewers on a path to becoming extremists. The ADL also faults the popular and polarizing host for providing a platform to guests who tout paranoid fears like: Obama and his administration are trying to create a “civilian national security force” of political loyalists; or, that FEMA is building concentration camps to contain “dissidents.”

The report acknowledges that Beck has distanced himself from the FEMA claim. But the study’s authors conclude the “episode” was still a good example of how Beck uses “constant laments such as ‘I fear for my country’ to create a sense of anxiety about and hostility towards the government in his audience.”

The ADL, which was founded in 1913 “to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all,” says Beck is far more likely to lead his audience toward "extreme notions" than are his right-wing peers.

“While other conservative media hosts, such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, routinely attack Obama and his administration, typically on partisan grounds, they have usually dismissed or refused to give a platform to the conspiracy theorists and anti-government extremists,” the study's authors write.

Ultimately, a rising tide of anti-government anger could lead to more extremists and violence, the ADL warns.

Beck’s spokesman declined comment to the News."
