I have only had that experience twice, there was nothing to get over because the reason I broke their heart was due to how many times they had already broken mine. I felt no regret or guilt for leaving. Perhaps thats the answer, not to leave until you know you are ok with it.

 How do you get over breaking someone else's heart? I would not think that they have anything to get over... they leave, they decide when, where, how... it's a selfish thing most of the time... am I missing something? Why would they have a broken heart?? - if they cared enough to have the feelings to "break" - they would not leave in the first place???

In their minds, they will ALWAYS and FOREVER,,,recall being HURT. Ask a old person say 80, who still has their wit,,wink THEY can still tell you of,,their first broken heart... The only way to get PAST being HURT,,,is to go-on. To stop thinking about them,,by getting YOUR mind on OTHERs,,,,lol Or other things to keep the mind busy....
