Everyone sometimes says the wrong thing out of hurt in a relation,but if its consistent and hurtful...than it can be two things,either the "hurted" has, or is, doing something so bad that the "hurtful" cant get over it, and needs to just leave.
Or the "hurtful" has dropped his emotional marbles somewhere and needs to find them,either way its a leave leave situation

The person doing the degrading usually thinks he or she loves you. Unfortunately, they aren't capable of all the qualities that are required to truly be in love. So call it lust, lonliness, addiction, drama, arrested development; if it continues to happen on a frequent basis you need to get out. It usually never changes.

It's all a matter of perception and empathy.

Somebody can be in love with you, but still say hurtful things to you.

People sometimes have issues to deal with. If my significant other said degrading things to me, I could take it many different ways, the least of which would be if they really cared about me.

Sorry, I'm really deep. Maybe I feel the way I do because I don't view my partner as a shield between myself and the rest of the world.
It's not fun when your protection becomes uncomfortable.

If they say something that gets under my skin, then it's on! I'm going to have fun in a vibrant discussion with them and if they can hold there own, it just might really turn me on.
