I just checked my sinks. From a standing start they both form counter clockwise whirlpools 100% of the time with no jets to influence them. I admit the forces involved are small but since it is 100% accurate, what is the "other" explanation?

Exactly.

Scientific repeatable proof. ...of something. laugh

Well, since the Coriolis effect is know to act in that direction, and there aren't any other forces acting, maybe it doesn't take much force to point water in the same direction.

When I took physics a long time ago, they used a drain and a small pendulum to illustrate the effect.

Well then I guess I must be misinformed.

No biggie.

If it works, it works.

Well, I don't have much in the way to test with at the moment. But here's another article addressing it.

http://www.ems.psu.edu/~fraser/Bad/BadCoriolis.html

Everything I have read indicates that the state of the water and the shape of the sink would have far more influence than the coriolis effect, which makes perfect sense to me.

However I have yet to hear from anyone that has seen their sink drain clockwise in the northern hemisphere.

Wow all this hype because I said I see the black hole like a toilette full of water flushing away.laugh

Well I am off to go flush my toilettelaugh drinker

if you fall into a black hole the gravity differential is so much that the gravity on your head (if you go in head first) would be a thousand times greater than the gravity on your feet

which would just shred you into your component atoms (and then the same effect would even destroy the atoms) so fast you would never know

Relative to whom? If I'm not mistaken, time is distorted rather heavily by the intense gravity in a Black Hole. In such a state of acceleration, it would take weeks for a person to be shredded into his/her respective components (atoms/subatomic particles).

Have you never heard of the butterfly effect? You might be surprised.

Interesting.

I did not know atoms could be destroyed.

Well toilets are generally designed to spin in a specific direction. The jets are pointed to make the water spin to more effectively clean and dispose of..... you get the picture.

First of all WHY??? If that were true...WHY would one direction be any different than another? But its not true anyway.

No you don't read well.

It is not just toilets. And it is NOT the design. I poured water in the bowel and it still went counter clockwise.

Did not use any "jets."

Also did experiments on two sinks and two different toilets, no jets involved.

Pretty sure I read fine... he wrote that he was off to flush his toilet.

Apparently you did not read HOW I conducted my experiments. No jets involved. Also works on sinks....you get the picture.

Plus, why would toilets 'be designed' to spin water in a certain direction?

Please produce evidence of this assertion. laugh laugh laugh

Now this subject is getting ridiculously funny. laugh laugh

Jeannie, I like you... I really do. But I wasn't even referring to you on my post. I was referring to his comment that he was off to flush his toilet and stating that most toilets are designed to spin. I don't know which way... I'll be sure to check mine when I get home. But most toilets angle their jets to more effectively clean. So whether these toilets spin clockwise or counterclockwise wouldn't be relevant. I wasn't speaking to the sink or a standing pool of water. Check your toilet. It likely spins because it was designed to spin. flowerforyou flowerforyou

"Many toilets are designed to have the water enter the toilet bowl through a series of small holes under the porcelain seat rim. These holes are angled slightly, causing the water in the bowl to swirl around. This swirling action, combined with the speed of the entering water, causes the contents of the bowl to quickly and thoroughly exit from the base of the bowl, into the waste pipes, and, hopefully, out of your life forever. I live in Miami! I flushed my toilete and it went right to left. I guess that would be counter clockwise right. drinker

Now what is the reward for doing this? laugh

We are talking some serious $hit here.

What about a pendulum? If Coriolis effects would not disturb several pounds of water, what makes a few ounces of metal on a string change direction?

http://geosci.uchicago.edu/~nnn/LAB/DEMOS/coriolis.html

Push the play button on the discs and pretend you are looking in a toilet or, if you are cool, pretend you are looking at a black hole with stripes.
