Illegal Students Await Immigration Plan

WASHINGTON (AP) - At 23, Mariana should be carefree. She is finishing up
her undergraduate degree at the University of California, Los Angeles,
and has been accepted to a master's program at Harvard University's
education school.

But life is not so simple for Mariana, who insisted that only her first
name be published because she is illegally in the United States and
worries she could be deported to Guatemala, where she was born.

"I'm even afraid of eating an apple in the library because I'm afraid of
getting caught," she said.

Mariana also worries about how she will pay her tuition and what kind of
work she will get after she completes school. "What happens next?
Without a work permit, how do you exercise your degree?" she said during
a recent interview.

How did she get a loan is what I want to know, when so many Americans
are turned down??

Anzguy have you applied for a Pel grant? My friend got thru college on
one plus a job.The great thing is you dont have to pay it back.

I think higher education should be free to those who actually want an
education not a wild college experience. The rest should be given
vocational training .

Poor mariana..not.

Listen to Barbiesbigsister, Aznguy, she knows what she speaks of.

What's wrong with Kent State? What's wrong with community college? I
worked for the community college in my area. It is a great place. Your
credits will transfer and is much more reasonable. Find
scholarships...they are out there. Like the bizarre ones (People that
like Froot Loops, Grandchildren of Pirates, etc.)

Thank George Dubuwah for the tuition increase. The schools have no
choice but to raise tuition cost when the government cuts their funding
budgets so dramatically.

I am currently attending SLCC in Utah and my tution recently went up
also. I think it was like a 3% increase. My daughter also attends the
same school and applies for everything available out there for help with
school. As for myself I get help through work. If it wasn't for that I
would be just like my daughter, applying for grants and scholarships
where available.

Hey Jax, I was talking about my university which is public and has also
suffered a tuition increase. Private institutions increase school
expenses as they wish to allocate, not based on state spending bills.

Any more in the work place it is required that you have a degree in
something to be promoted. So people are returning or going for the
first time to attain their degree. So after all is said and done, does
this garantee a promotion or to hire on with better wages?
