She stood in the doorway looking about the room, taking in the whole preset mood he had set forth to impress and make her feel comfortable. Her heart was racing and her face flushed red as he passed by the main room flaunting his softest smile at her. He disappeared down the hallway and she watched him intently as he moved.
"He is good looking", she thought to herself. "But what am I doing here? Everybody told me to stay away from this creep!"
He reappeared carrying a small wooden box about one foot square and four inches deep. It displayed intricate southwestern carvings of cacti, rabbits and coyotes set before a sunset over a mesa. It was also set with gold inlays accentuating the sun and its rays beaming out from above it. In his other hand he carried a bottle of unopened wine with two glasses nestled between the fingers grasping the bottle. He smiled and motioned for her to sit on the sofa as he placed the box on the glass table and opened the bottle.
She jumped when the cork popped. He noticed this, turned to her cocking his left eyebrow and tilted his head sideways in a questioning manner then gently set the bottle down on the table.
The music from the radio was playing a pleasant melody about some lonely man who was missing his girl from around the world and the volume was turned down very low while the scented candles he had lit before her arrival burned and filled the air with the pleasant aroma of jasmine and apple cinnamon.
For a moment he stood before her with a scrutinizing look on his face as he studied her flushed expression and wandering eyes. The look on her face made him feel uneasy so he turned away and walked around the table to sit opposite from her on the recliner placed just so he could see her glowing beauty. He reached across the table and poured himself a glass of wine then made eye contact as he manipulated his brow to offer her a glass. She sat blankly staring at him as her face went even redder still.
The gents face withdrew all expression as he set the glass down, picked up his own glass and leaned back in the chair then swiveled the glass in his hand as he stared down at it. He stopped swiveling long enough to take a sip and proceeded to commence the slow spinning motion for a while.
The song changed to an orchestrated romantic melody whispering softly in the background and they both sat in silence.
Her posture was very rigid and uncomfortable displaying her nearly perfect form. Her chest pushed her pink blouse apart revealing her nicely cleaved bosom where her gold necklace that presented a golden flowered locket rested neatly. His eyes traveled carefully down to her tightly pressed thighs, then from her matching pink skirt that ended at the knee line, down to her thin ankles and feet strapped into white spike heeled shoes.
He glanced up to catch her sharply shifting her eyes away from his gaze and pretending that she was not looking at all. She turned slowly back to him to flash a forced smirk and look quickly down to inspect her nails while brushing imaginary lint from her pantyhose.
He gave a large sigh as he leaned forward to place his glass of wine upon the table, placed his elbows upon his knees and meshed his fingers together.
Her gaze came straight to his thoughtful hazel green eyes, unsure of what to expect and she began trembling slightly. She watched as he reached with his left hand toward the small box he had brought out earlier. He pulled it toward him and lifted the top toward her to where she could not see the contents and her heart leapt to her throat.
She quickly stood to her feet and as steady as she could hold her voice she asked, "May I use the restroom?”
"Of course", he replied "but can it wait? Please sit for just one more moment and I will show you where it is."
Her face drew back and she clumsily reached back for the sofa and sat timidly, her eyes never leaving his hand holding open the lid to the box.
"You seem extremely nervous, sweetie. Didn't I tell you that I would assure you of your safety with me?"
"Y, Yes." but her expression showed other thoughts racing through her mind.
He shook his head slowly as his eyes went from hers down to his feet and came back up smiling a very soft and genuine smile. He laughed softly as he pulled the box closer to him and reached inside rummaging through its contents never truly making them visible.
"I like being mysterious and I know that people do not know what to make of me some days so they tend to jump to conclusions.” He looked into her eyes intently as his smile dropped to a semi-smirk. He then carefully turned the box toward her so she could see the contents of the box.
"I simply ask that you judge for yourself. You decide what kind of person I am and this box is a good clue into my life. Take a look!” he said as he leaned back into his chair once again began swishing his glass of wine while he watched her expressions.
She gazed into his eyes for a moment and studied the deep sincerity they possessed then she slowly leaned forward to look at the contents of the box.
Her face lost all fear as she picked through the items within and she studied each individual item very carefully. One by one she would take an item from the box and set it on the table after she had inspected them and neatly arranged them into different associated piles. Tears filled her eyes as she sorted through the odds and ends presented before her. At one point she reached into her purse for a tissue to keep her make up intact but found the man sitting across from her was already offering her a box from which to find one more readily.
Her eyes continued to well up as she looked into his eyes and then back at the items before her on the table. She continued sifting through them and a smile crossed her face through the tears rolling uncontrollably down her face. She had never felt like this before. So much emotion poured through her heart as she laughed and cried examining the little treasure she found on the table.
He watched as she satisfied her curiosity and his eyes smiled deeply as he watched her fears and doubts melt away as would an ice cube on the scorching Nevada desert floor. His heart too felt light and relieved to watch the phenomenal change within her as she took small footsteps through the path of his life. A solitary tear rolled down his cheek as they once again made eye contact.
"I am so sorry!" she exclaimed through her tears.
He merely smiled and said, "Still need the restroom?"
