I agree Andrea, not for serious topics unless there is a moment of light
heartedness being described in the text, or someone is perhaps trying to
lighten the mood, which is needed at times.

i think people got used to it cause it was the only way to express any
kind of emotion through ur text. that was before these nifty little
smiley faces though:tongue:

Lea, I'm not having a problem with a joke, I'm having a problem with
people using it after nearly every sentence.
In a serious topic for me it is totally out of place.

Lea, I do not think that I complained about using periods or slang, I
just pointed out that "LOL (Internet slang), an acronym or abbrieviation
of "laughing out
loud", "laugh out loud", "lots of laughs."
does not fit into a serious topic whatsoever.

Just some IFY, we also use LOL on a gaming site that I play on to mean
Lots of Luck, that could be used at the end of a serious conversation
depending on what the topic was. Just my opinion though..

I don't think it appropriate in a religious debate, but thanks for the
input.

{{{{{Rose_47}}}}} Hi and welcome flowerforyou

I suppose most people chatting on line use LOL to show the other party
that they are paying some sort of attention to the on-going chat, a sort
replacement smile instead of a real smile.........in the case of an
actual face to face conversation

You show that you are paying attention by replying to a post, don't you?

Good question....

Some people in real conversation will giggle nervously at the end of
what they have to say. I interpret it as a lack of self-confidence: they
are trying to dismiss their own statement and make sure it isn't taken
seriously in case it sounds stupid An anticipatory apology???

Could it be for this reason that people add 'LOL's, or lots of
emoticons?

this is being way overdissected.

I agree with oceans, I would interpret it as being a "nervous laugh".
Especially during an otherwise serious conversation, or something that
may be hard for that person to say.

I laugh all the time in RL, and since I type how I talk, I "lol" all the
time! And I tend not to go into serious treads unless its about
depression, where I use only 1 lol or something.
