Breakthrough hope for breast cancer treatment

By Deborah Jones (AFP) – 6 hours ago

VANCOUVER, Canada — Researchers reported the first evidence Thursday that cancer cells genetically mutate as the disease progresses, a "watershed" discovery they say holds hope for new treatments.

The researchers completed the world's first sequencing of the billions of letters in the DNA of a female cancer patient at three different stages, in just weeks. The feat was reported as the cover story in the October 8 edition of the science journal Nature.

Showing that cancer evolves "will lead to a shift in perspective" in how cancer is treated, lead researcher Samuel Aparicio of Canada's British Columbia Cancer Agency (BCCA) told AFP.

When a cell divides as a normal and lifelong process, the DNA genetic code is copied to each new cell. When mutations cause the new cells to grow out of control, cancer can occur, noted the agency in a statement.

Researchers tracked mutations in the woman's healthy cells, in addition to a local tumour when her breast cancer was first diagnosed, and in cells nine years later after the cancer spread, or metastasized.

In the metastasized cells they found 32 DNA mutations, said Aparicio.

"When we looked back to see if they were present in the primary tumour, we found only five mutations that could have been present in all cells."

40 men from Camp Lejeune now report breast cancer

By William R. Levesque, Times Staff Writer
In Print: Wednesday, October 7, 2009

A Florida man with male breast cancer says he has now identified 39 other men with the rare disease who all share one thing: They lived at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

The numbers surprise scientists studying water contamination at the Marine Corps installation where up to a million Marines and family members may have been exposed to tainted water during 30 years ending in the late 1980s.

Among them are more than 12,000 Floridians who have signed up for a health survey.

"This is statistically unheard of," said Tallahassee resident Mike Partain, 41, a breast cancer survivor who was born at the base and is looking for others like himself. "We've got a cancer cluster that defies explanation."

The cluster is expected to be discussed Thursday when the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs holds a hearing on contamination at U.S. military installations. A Marine Corps major general is expected to testify, as will Partain.

In addition, Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., told the St. Petersburg Times on Tuesday that she is working to get the Senate Armed Services Committee to call a hearing on water contamination at Camp Lejeune.

"I'm not a scientist or a physician," Hagan said of the breast cancer numbers. "But that seems like a significant number to me."

The Times first reported in June that Partain had found nine other men with breast cancer and ties to Camp Lejeune. After that initial story, eight others stepped forward. The total climbed to 40 after CNN broadcast a report about the cancer cluster last month.

A man has just a 1-in-1,000 lifetime chance of getting male breast cancer. Only 1,900 a year are diagnosed with the disease.

Driver suspended for pink tie

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- An Illinois bus driver said he was given a one-day, unpaid suspension for wearing a pink tie in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

William "Bill" Jones, 46, said he wore his pink tie to work with the Springfield Mass Transit District on the first Friday in October as part of a campaign encouraging men to wear pink on October Fridays as a reminder to women to get annual mammograms, the Springfield State Journal-Register reported Wednesday.

Jones said he was ordered to change out of the pink tie and was later informed of the suspension as a consequence for breaking the district's strict dress code.

However, officials ruled after the incident that drivers can wear pink on Fridays in October as part of the month-long awareness push.

Jones, who was forced to complete his punishment despite the district's decision, said he plans to file a formal grievance.
