But scholars are bristling at attempts to link the ancient Maya with trends in contemporary spirituality. Maya civilization, known for advanced writing, mathematics and astronomy, flourished for centuries in Mesoamerica, especially between A.D. 300 and 900. Its Long Count calendar, which was discontinued under Spanish colonization, tracks more than 5,000 years, then resets at year zero.

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

Modern spiritualists, hucksters and con-men have given 2012 a meaning the Mayan's never intended.

If none of the forementioned explanations is acceptable, then

*** Unfortunately, the dates are all screwed_up: ***

1. the original Mayan Callendar is at least 5,000 years old!

2. Our Modern callendar counts days/weeks/months/years from Zero -- which is a Birth of Jesus... -- and has been adopted some 600+ years after His death! (*** quite an approximation ***)

3. In addition to that, the callendar has undergone so many revisions and resets, that it is highly unlikely the dates are in synch with the original!

So...

But something will happen -- unfortunately, at a much smaller scale -- justifying the voices of the modern-day Oracles, who'd be saying:
SEE, WE WARNED YOU!!!

So, what does everyone think? I ask the question as I found a pretty good show about it on the history channel last night, and was just curious as to what others think?

2012 is y2k redux. or as yogi berra would say, "it's de ja vue all over again".

Back in the 70's it was said the mayan calendar ended in 2000... (chariots of the gods and simular bs).

Would be nice if they could make up their minds.

Hucksters indeed.

It will NOT be the end of the world.

But there could be some changes happening.

Can you give some specific examples of what you may think may come to pass?

I have no expanation, but a surefire way of settling the question once and for all, a long time before 2012.

What I propose is that we make bets. All-in. Everyone bets their entire life savings at present time, only positive balances are accpeted. Those who bet "the world won't end" will get the pile if the world is not ending in 2012. Those who bet "the world will end" will get the pile of cash if the world ends in 2012.

I'm in. I bet there will not be an end to the world at 2012.

Place you bets, ladies and laddies. Fait vous jeux.

There is nothing about this date being "the end of the world"..

People have come up with their own theories based on their own perception..

perhaps what is meant by "end of times" is end of times, as WE know it...a period of enlightenment maybe?....or maybe nothing at all...and what a disapointment that would be...(((LORIflowers )))

A period of enlightenment would be nice...

Age of Aquarius...
