There were 2 of them there looking for $$ for food. So I cam home and made up a pot of spaghetti and took some back for both of them. The were fricking starving...one said he was a Gulf War vet and he was now homeless. The other guy was old and sick and lost his job.. and had no where to go.

It is hard to determine if people asking for money or anything are really down and out and have no other option. Panhandling and free loading have become a major business for some types nowadays.

Myself, if I have what they are asking for, and it won't break me or cause me to be in an unsafe situation, I will just give it. Not my place to judge another person's situation.

I have a song in my head... that I heard several years ago... and we really do not know what someone's reasons for being in these situations are.

Are you looking for an answer for ALL people or just this particular person? According to my recent studies in Bio Genetics, I hypothesize that a mutant version of a particular allele of a certain gene on one of his 23 homologous pairs of chromosomes has caused some phenotypic variation resulting in a deficiency thus described in your situation. But I could be wrong.ohwell

The guy was upset over the loss of his brother. Spends last dollars to buy booze to dull pain. Booze makes smokers want to smoke. Needs smokes now. Brother who used to supply them is now dead due to lung cancer. Hence he asks a stranger. Seems perfectly logical to me.

I get the sense you aren't a particularly compassionate individual. Or perhaps you doubted the brother dying story. Or just don't like giving your hard earned money to strangers drinking 40's. Can't blame ya there. Point being, "WTF is wrong with people?" can apply to you as well! "There but for the grace of God go I" young man. I think it's nice he asked so politely. I'd have given him a smoke or bought him a pack, but I'm a sucker for those in need so...

I'm a nurse. I know what compassion for my fellow man is. I also know the difference between being down and out, and being a bum. The guy's brother didn't die today. He probably didn't even have a brother. He just wanted someone to give him money, so he could buy cigarettes.

If he's an alcoholic, I don't consider him as a bum.

I've worked with a social services group. And I'm tragically empathetic. But after years of trying to help and seeing it not make any difference and in fact being hurt by it, I have become jaded. In all my time at social services I can only think of one woman that actually wanted a leg up and we actually helped. The rest.... all they really wanted was the free meal and a roof.

About 15 years ago two men came up to me outside a grocery store asking for help. They said they had no money or phone and their car wouldn't start.... could I give them a jump start. I pulled my car over to "their car" and they robbed me at gun point. They didn't get much, but it changed me. I was angry about it for years.... because they changed me and now somebody who might really need help won't get it from me.

I won't generally give to the guy on the street (there have been excpetions). I will give to social services... I still believe in their work, even if it's just keeping people from going hungry and providing a roof. I still give to the food bank. And I still support organizations that are trying to help. But I won't do it myself anymore. It's enabling them to continue to do it. Usually i direct them to the nearest social services or food kitchen.

I say if the nicotine releases dopamine in his brain and it makes him feel good, more power to him. Cigarettes are the one vice I think addicts and mentally ill people do need.

I don't agree with his approach, but at least he asked rather than took.
