A comet hits the earth, and puts large amounts of dust into the atmosphere, blocking the sun's light and warmth. Where would be the best place to take refuge? Why?

I guess it would depend on how long this continues, how many days??
If the dust settles and how many days until light returns.

A well stocked fallout shelter with about 50 years worth of food, fuel and oxygen stocked. That should do it... The cloud of dust should have settled enough to get some light back after 50 years...

Some interesting info about what would happen after a large meteor impact (firestorms, yikes!) http://www.beautifulmeteorites.com/What+Would+Happen+if+a+Large+Meteor+Hit+the+Earth+Today%3F.26186.htm

Actually, according to http://www.armageddononline.org/asteroid.php, The resulting dust cloud may only last "several months" (it was referring to the meteor that hit the Yucatan about 65 million years ago), so you would really only need the fall out shelter for a couple of years...just enough to let the plants re-establish themselves.

Of course, all of that is dependent on surviving the initial impact (we would have to be prepared for it, and already in our shelters), and having some kind of plan to get plants going again, if the dust clouds were enough to completely wipe out ALL vegetation (Perhaps we could preserve food plants at least in hydroponic gardens underground?)

Hmmm....so we are talking years, this would not be good.

If it were a comet that extreme, It wouldn't matter where we are.
It would last so long that we would freeze, and or starve because all plant life would die. can you say "ICE AGE"

In a Wal*Mart Supercenter. Just get there first and lock all the doors. No windows at all :D. Tell me you couldn't live happily for months in a place filled with food, books, electronics and I'm sure they have generators too.

It sounds good but I think people would stampede these places in a true diaster, all would be chaos in the world.

Michigan.

Mainly because it would be cold and clouded over. Basically...it would be November all year...lol

An eternal November..........Dude, thats really depressing.

I don't think it will really matter, most life forms will be dead shortly, and that includes most of the humans.
New theory is that is exactly what happened in Central America, which caused all the dinosaurs to die off.

Realistically, when I was young ('50s), we were told in Arkansas we were one of the top 10 primary "first strike" sites - we had missles silos, SAC, etc. but we also have one of the top 10 safest locations because of air flow and artesian well waters. I'd say, "Run to Arkansas" 'cause the nuclear threat is a fraction of what it was, Arkansas still has it's geography!
