Anybody here ever watch the movie "Doctor Strangelove, or how I stopped worrying and learned to love the bomb?"

There was a dialogue between the Russian Ambassador and the President about deterrent force. Deterrent force does not work if people do not know about it.

Executions need to be public. So should beatings if they are employed. People are desensitized to the idea of executions because they don't see them happen. Every person in prison where a convicted death row inmate getting their just rewards should be forced to watch. Also the idea of Humanely putting them down? FAH! Hang em, shoot them, behead them, or better yet kill them in a way that makes them scream. Even the hardest criminal will get scared hearing the screams of a dying man especially if they think they are next.

One of the ultimate problems is if we were such an enlightened people we should not have criminals in the first place. We are not. We still act like animals in more complicated ways. Heck, we ARE animals no matter what religion pushes on us. We spent too much time with Criminal Rights that we took away the rights of the Victims who committed no crime. Mexico has no death penalty and look at the mess they are in. I dare ANY of the liberals out there to go to Mexico right now! Complain about Criminal Rights there.

For as unfortunate as it is we are a nation of TOO MANY LAWS and not enough enforcement!

Calling some ppl animals is an insult to the animals. Animals only kill to eat and survive. To my knowledge, they don't rape or abuse their young either.

Just some info:

The removal of capital punishment from the Canadian Criminal Code in 1976 has not led to an increase in the murder rate in Canada. In fact, Statistics Canada reports that the murder rate has generally been declining since the mid-1970s. In 2006, the national murder rate in Canada was 1.85 homicides per 100,000 population, compared to the mid-1970s when it was around 3.0.

The Myth of Deterrence: Death penalty does not reduce homicide rate

DEATH NO MORE

09:26 AM CST on Sunday, December 2, 2007

In theory, the death penalty saves lives by staying the hand of would-be killers. The idea is simple cost-benefit analysis: If a man tempted by homicide knew that he would face death if caught, he would reconsider.

But that's not the real world. The South executes far more convicted murderers than any other region yet has a homicide rate far above the national average. Texas' murder rate is slightly above average, despite the state's peerless deployment of the death penalty. If capital punishment were an effective deterrent to homicide, shouldn't we expect the opposite result? What's going on here?

Human nature, mostly. Murder is often a crime of passion, which by definition excludes the faculties of reason. The jealous husband who walks in on his wife and another man is in no position to deliberate rationally on the consequences of killing his rival. The convenience store robber who chooses in a split-second to shoot the clerk has not pondered the potential outcomes of pulling the trigger.

People overtaken by rage, panic or drunkenness should be brought to justice, of course, but they are hardly paragons of pure reason, and it's unreasonable to assert that they consider the possibility of a death sentence when committing their crimes.

Most per capita executions, Murder rate

Oklahoma, 5.8

Texas, 5.9

Delaware, 4.9

Virginia, 5.2

Missouri, 6.3

• The 10 states with the lowest murder rates have collectively executed 11 people since 1976. That's only 1 percent of all executions carried out by states since the death penalty resumed.

• Nine of the 10 states with the highest murder rates in the country have the death penalty.

Short and sweet, NO CORPORAL PUNISHMENT.

I do however, think that if someone commits murder they should be executed immediately.

Do you know how many "murderers" are in jail that are wrongfully accused? Once you kill them, you can't bring them back. No amount of money will make the situation better. One man was just freed after 23 years last month because DNA evidence proved him innocent. If you killed him, what would you say to him and his family had we killed him immediately?

My first line was what I feel. My 2nd, well, that was being a bit sarcastic. Sorry, I should have qualified it.

I am actually strongly opposed to what most have posted. What can I say, I'm from the Boston area and we are either Democrat or Liberal.
