My opinion is that there is too much media telling us or subtley pressuring women in how we're "supposed" to look, act or be in order to be attractive, desirable or good enough. I, for one, don't buy into it and have taught my daughter the same. We all have **** to deal with on a daily basis without having to be bombarded by the need to obssess about meeting some sort of stupid standard that has been set for us by others that are meaningless in our lives.
I dont need media to be pressured. I know what is good looking and what isnt just with my eyes. Im sure that is what it was like before media came into the picture as well.

It's the "Let other people do your thinking for you" mentality that pervades so much of modern life.

I have always wondered how it is that some guy in Paris can say "Next fall, women will be wearing orange and purple shoes," and millions of women will immediately run out to buy orange and purple shoes.

And it's not just the women that fall into this mindset....

You have to do certain things, be a certain way, think a certain way, in order to fit in.

Those of us who ask WHY orange and purple shoes, well, we just don't fit in....

But sheep are easier to control, easier to keep in line. Sheep don't ask questions....right?

It can be difficult for those of us who can't fit neatly into some precut cardboard cutout category --

It so happens that I agree with you Lex, especially in the "next fall colors and styles." You know, the hard part is, that because of these predictions, the buyers of the clothing stores, indeed DO purchase the following colors and styles making the majority of the items exactly that! Because of that, I always need to really search for something I want unless it falls in that catagory, which it rarely does. I STILL don't have any "leopard print" anything in my wardrobe! Lmao

It just puzzles me as to why people are so willing to let others do this thinking FOR them. Am I to believe that most people could not figure out how to buy their own shoes if not for the designers telling them what they "nned"?

But this is a common thing in LIFE, not just in fashion or beauty or whatever -- most of the people I know have never even really thought about their lives -- they're on automatic pilot. "We do things this way because this is the way they've always been done."

Completely ignoring the idea that perhaps that process may have been flawed from the first....?

As for "standards of beauty" -- my own preferences have always been a little too far off mainstream to be understood by my male acquaintances, who can't comprehend that I don't find [insert name of newest, "hottest" female celebrity here] attractive in the least.

I still cling to the notion of deciding -- for myself -- what's attractive and what isn't.

I guess I've been lucky; I've never seen anyone in the media that I could identify with, especially when I was a kid, so I never felt any pressure. That, and I was intelligent enough to know that people on tv weren't "real life."

Great question...
I can remember back in high school all the brain washing the media tried back then. I am thankful I grew up in a small town where none of fell into all that. I didn't even know who twiggy was til I was married and one child with another on the way.

I was raised that each person holds beauty of some kind it is our job to find it. I was also told beauty comes from with in period. Sure you can make a person a beautiful sculpture and that is all there is if there is nothing inside. I have never conformed,I think for me I will continue to live outside the box, I dont' want in that box ever. I raised my children to really not care if someone does't like you or doesn't like how you do something., Do it anyway, be who you are and let them be who they are.

I abhor all the self help books, even though in my field I am supposed to advocate some. I rarely do, since I think most of the answers people seek is inside of them. The trick is to find out how to bring it out.

only the weak minded will believe it...to be honest all this BS about women being the ones who have a concern about perfection...well i have news they are chasing a ghost and i would rather them simply be who they are...which is hard for them cause they are to busy chasing that ghost:smile:
