Leif Harmsen, once a Facebook user, now crusades against it. Having dismissed his mother’s snap judgment of the site (“Facebook is the devil”), Harmsen now passionately agrees. He says, not entirely in jest, that he considers it a repressive regime akin to North Korea, and sells T-shirts with the words “Shut Your Facebook.” What especially galls him is the commercialization and corporate regulation of personal and social life. As Facebook endeavors to be the Web’s headquarters — to compete with Google, in other words, and to make money from the information it gathers — it’s inevitable that some people would come to view it as Big Brother.

I'm very cautious about what I write on there and what I participate in. Did you see that article about how some married woman's face was used in a "come on" ad for singles and her husband saw it on the sidebar on there? They will use anything you put on there if you don't know to look for the opt out functions.

How would I begin to keep in close personal contact with my 672 friends if I didn't have facebook to constantly send them my high scores from Farkle and Mafia Wars?

it is a fantastic way to spy on the kids.

I know who the sluts and hoes are..

I know who is dating whom....

I know the grandparents feel more connected and converse with their G-kids through the site

These are but a few of the positive attributes

and I know there is a tremendous amount of collaboration on the Physics and Chemistry homework through that site, all of which I am fine with..

These are but a few of the positive attributes

If you ditto two things, is it a tritto? laugh

I'm not the least bit interested in face book. Of course, i might be just a tad bit partial to Mingle2.

I do have a myspace, checked it just the other day, first time in months...I missed a concert invitation in April..laugh for a local band here, which was stupid, coz all they had to do was call and say, hey we're jammin in V town this weekend. slaphead

I love the comments! Just for the record, I'm not at all 'anti-facebook' nor am I 'anti-social networking' ... but I do think these companies that run the sites are fundamentally 'evil until proven innocent' - they will be taken to court and they will be taken to task by their users (already have been - for a sneaky and unpopular change of their TOS) for various shenanigans in the future.

I just think we should keep our eyes open as technologies (and tech companies) reshape our world.

Obviously... same goes for crack, right? Do you think people who don't like it should limit their response to 'not using it'? I mean, are you saying they shouldn't also criticise it?

Well said. I politely call that nerd-network FakeBook, but that's just me.

My brother talked me into Facebook. So I visited my page or wall or whatever they call it and there were a bunch of friends and relatives talking about things I had no idea what! It was like, "Tap, tap, tap. Is this thing on? Helllooooo? I'm here. Anyone care?" There were photos of nieces and nephews and their friends sticking their pierced tongues out and there were some people I didn't even know but they wanted to be my friend!noway

I tried facebook, after a couple weeks I decided it was lame so I cancelled my account. I mean some of my friends om there would post every little detail of there lives, Who cares? This one woman would write what she had for breakfast and shes hot see, so all her guy gocker followers would comment on her every stupid little post like oh wow you had grapefruit thats so cool. I guess she loves the attention. I mean if I want to contact my friends n family I much prefer to call them and talk. I think these social networks keep people from actually talkng. Plus theres Email I can send a message to someone, I don't need all my other friends to read it. I just think its lame thats all. But what do I know anyway.
