OAKLAND, Calif. - A gunman killed three officers and gravely wounded another in two shootings Saturday, the first after a routine traffic stop and the second after a massive manhunt ended in gunfire, authorities said. The suspect was also killed. Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped a suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason. The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland closed to traffic. At about 3:30 p.m. officers, acting on an anonymous tip, found the suspect barricaded inside an apartment building, police said. Police said the suspect, 27-year-old Lovelle Mixon, of Oakland, fired an assault rifle at officers who came into the building to arrest him. Two officers were killed and a third was grazed by a bullet, police said. Acting Oakland police Chief Howard Jordan said police returned fire, killing Mixon. The slain officers were identified as Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, who was killed at the first shooting. The two members of the SWAT team who were killed at the second location were Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35. Officer John Hege, 41, is in grave condition. Somber officers at the police station hugged and consoled each other. "This is probably one of the worst incidents that has ever taken place in this history of the Oakland police department," Thomason said. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said it was a tragic day. "All four officers dedicated their lives to public safety and selflessly worked to protect the people of Oakland," he said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those lost, the Oakland Police Department and law enforcement officers throughout California during this difficult time." Police said Mixon wielded two different weapons, one at the first scene and another at the apartment building where he was hiding. Hours after Saturday's shootings near a busy intersection just blocks from a police substation in east Oakland, people were still at the scene of the first shooting as police tape blocked off streets. |

Of course not. It's not considered very news worthy when officers who do the job of protectin citizens get killed doin that job.

That is horrible news! This is the first I've heard of it, though I do live in Alabama. IMO, it would seem the criminal here got what he was after. You don't ever fire a weapon at police officers and expect to live, especially having killed 2 already. My prayers go out to the families of those officers who bravely served to protect. My prayers also go out to their fellow officers and other law enforcement officials. It really makes you wonder what the world is coming to when tragic events like this occur and nothing is mentioned through the media.

lilmomma, thanks for ur post. I was merely tryin to make a point I made in a previous thread. The point that when a civilian is tazed, taken down, etc. Everyone is quick to jump on the "hang the officer" bandwagon, but when an officer is killed, all u hear is crickets.

I can understand what you're saying. It's frustrating to me that our law enforcement officers don't get the respect they deserve. They put their lives on the line everyday to protect us. Yes, they do occassionally make mistakes. They are humans, not God. But most criminals usually ask for any poor treatment they receive from an officer. Don't know what happened with this woman and the taser, but if she was running or trying to attack an officer, I say the officer did what he thought was best at the time.

Geepers Reddbeans, I'm not sitting by my computer ever second of the day waiting for a new post. I just saw your post just now. I think there needs to be respect on both sides, for the citizen and the police. I am saddened that this has happened, just as I am when ever we loose a human being in such a horrible way, cops and civilians. And this idea that cops don't get the respect they deserve, you watch too much tv. There are more good people than bad and more people that respect the job officers do than those that do not. I do respect police officers and I show it when I encounter them and many many people do. |

I havent watched TV news in months so havent seen it
who was tazed? thats why cops want you to keep your hands on the wheel when they pull you over in the olden days when I got pulled over I would just hop out and say "Howdy" A couple of years ago I almost got shot for doing that so now I just sit with my hands on the wheel so they can see em |
