Lovedream......(Liszt)
If it was 1917, i'd have the purest crush on you then too.....so much ceremony to go through! white dresses and bonnets, curtsey's and lady fair......So much tripping over myself to get your attention(and it's not working), and throwing balls and showing off playing sports(and that's not working either)...me bumbling around, practicing what to say in the mirror(not going well, *chuckling*)... You're soo smart in class too, So quick with answers! Something I really admired!!!.... I never got up the nerve to ask you to the dance, and finally when i did, (Shane) All-star had asked you already. All-star and you looked glorious at the dance, and you two were having a wonderful time, as i watch you, the lovedream...happy and content, but my heart aching for you, and me realizing, in your eyes that i don't exist... but one day, you said hi to me, after i said hi to you once!! what a day that was!!!! You looked right at me for a second!.... and slightly smiled!!!!!!........then you talked with your friends and went on about the plans for the coming summer, and the next dance.... and summer was approaching! We were called to war. Wilson declared war on germany! I saw you say good by to allstar,,,how lucky he was!!!! a really long cowboy type kiss from you!!!!! wow!!! What i wouldn't do for one of those!!!!! I'd cross oceans!!!!! I'd hike across whole countries!!!! I'd do anything!!!!! I'd die!!!!!!!............................oh god................I'm doing all those things anyway! and not for you!!!!!! I'm scared! I'm only seventeen!!! I fear religion more than i believe it!!!! As the train was leaving, I screamed your name, and said bye! I, I,..!!! ....You looked at me and squinted with a half a smile, allstar was looking too...at me, not good! As i sat down i finnished very quietly, love you... The train started rolling, faster and faster and all of you, and our little town dissappeared in the distance in the mist on a warm overcast day of 1917..... Germany.......august 1917, Flanders and Verdun, we got hammered! but we were making headway, digging trenches and moving forward, and our gear and clothes were wearing thin, our shoes were shot, but we were glad it was warm at least. We all had jungle rot, and i wish i had someone to write to, someone special, like the other guys had....tough break kid! do your job......Packages everywhere once a month, everywhere but for me.....I finally got one from mom.....soggy cookies, but still tasted good.... better than rations....rats would taste better if i could just roast a fire....Rations are gone now too, just not enough to go around,.... We're trenched down at Menin ridge, and artillary was making the night sky, daytime, with explosions everywhere, and everyone dying around us. We are all that's left of our company..... How i live still is a mystery, but me, Charlie Denton from Jersey, and Allstar. we were beyond pissing our pants, the flack-shock had worn to weariness....we were the last of our company, and we integrated with other halves of companies, boroughed tight down in these trenches...I looked over at Allstar (it's what we called him, go figure) we figured if anyone could make it through, he could, and we all loved him and respected him..he saved our ***** more than once, a real hero! smart too! boy, were you were one lucky girl!....... I stuttered, and said, you, y, you, you've got the prettiest and best girl in the world you know, he looks at me and smiles, and says, I know kid...i know you're fond of her too, I see, and I know... I was embarrassed........I said, I wish I had someone, just anyone now....yanno? you're really lucky!...thanks kid, I mean really, thanks! I said, well, you get back home safe and take care of her after this...if we make it. I feel kinda dead yanno? Charlie nods his head slightly. Sargent Wenley was coming through the trench toward us, and said he needed a volunteer, I spoke up without thinking, it just came out of my mouth! allright then, come with me.... I turned around to see Allstar and Charlie as I went with sarge down the trench, and it was a look i'll never forget.........we all get that look.............okay here's what you"re gonna do, he showed me the map.........the light was enveloping, extremely painful, but shockingly comfortable....disconnecting, but aware........outside, but in....... (Present day) As I sit here and wonder......is it my time now with her? ...for awhile?... how long?(I hope it's awhile) I daydream of her, she's always there, ever in my mind.....I hope she and Allstar had a great life, had children maybe, and grandchildren!! what a great guy! he said I was too. I'm lucky! I'm so lucky! right Allstar??? wherever you are now!!!!! thanks Allstar!!!!.... Hey Allstar!!! I love her!!!! ...p.s. .... I love you Lori. short story as promised.....thanks Smiless....
