On this day not so long ago
It seems as if it was just yesterday in my mind
I lay in a bed
Tubes, wires, needles all over me
In me, around me
Machines beeping and humming
The pain so excruciating
My face twisted in the pain
Tears falling
My mother holding my hand telling me to breathe
My father pacing the hall
My sister crying because she couldn't take my pain away

You inside me, moving and kicking
Heart rate slowing and speeding up
Causing the alarms to go off
I rested my hand on my stomach
Talking to you between breaths
Telling you its ok
Do not be scared
We will make it through this

They come and give me something for the pain
Making me drink a vile neon green substance
I balk, insisting its not good and it will cause me to vomit
They insist, so I drink it
And promptly vomit
Nurse soothing my brow
Telling me that it served its purpose
Rolling me over on my side
Placing a needle in my spine
And I continue to whisper to you
Its ok,do not be scared my little one

Moving me to a gurney
Whisking me away
I am awake
I feel no pain
I can hear them talking
Feel slight touches on my stomach
I hear a cry
And they bring you to me
I cannot hold you yet
My arms strapped down
Iv's in place
The nurse holds you close to my face
As I kiss your small head
Tears falling
You have come

They take you away
My mother holding you first
I am still in a room far away
As they sew me up
Repairing the damage inflicted
I drift off unaware of what they do
With thoughts of you

So small you are
Such a tiny joy
My little boy
You fought to be alive
To be born on this day

I've watched you grow from an infant to a man
I've held you in arms and still do
Watched you take your first step
Say your first word
Go to your first day of school
We've laughed and cried
Loved and fought
Through it all I never had a moments regret
So today, on your birthday, I simply want to say
I love you and treasure the boy you were
And the man you are now
