JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Two young girls died at the hospital after getting pulled from a Westside swimming pool Saturday morning.
The father of 2-year-old Veronica Arias Ysabel, and her 18-month-old sister, Gloria, is the one who pulled the girls from the water. One girl went to Baptist Medical Center and the other went to Orange Park Regional Medical Center. Both could not be revived. The drownings happened at around 8:30 a.m. at a home on Niska Trail, which is near Collins Road on the Westside. Tommy Nelson, a neighbor heard the sirens as he walked his dog. "It's usually quiet here," Nelson said, "We didn't know what was going on." "The 2 young victims had just woke up," said Sgt. Mike Perry, with the Jacksonville Police Department. "They both had a bottle that morning, fell back a sleep and at some point got out of the bed they were sleeping in." That's when authorities believe Veronica, the older of the two opened the door to the backyard. Police say the girls were out of their parent's sight for about 30 minutes. A friend staying at the home said everyone was sleeping, except for the father, who she said was on the computer. The father later found the girls at the bottom of the pool. "Oh it's a tragedy," said Nelson. "You don't think about stuff like that." Investigators say the family just moved into the home on Friday and had plans to get a safety net for their pool. |
