I heard it's going up because the cost of living went up. Or, at least, that was what I understood.

is it 7.55? something right around there. And I remember working for minimun wage at 5.15. My issue is that cost of living is just going to go up more with the minimum wage and they aren't raising everyones wages because it would cause inflation and lower the value of the dollar. So if you don't want to raise everyones pay, why this special group with no skills? What have they done to earn it?

Flawed logic right out of corporate headquarters playbook. There are many people trying to survive on minimum wage because that's the only jobs that are out there in many areas.

It's kind of generalizing, not to mention unfair, to say that just because someone makes minimum wage they have no skills, and as far as earning it...many work extremely hard.

And if I lost my job and had to take a minimum wage job to take care of myself and my son it better pay at least $7.55!

Why would I feel that way? $7.25/hr. is still hardly enough to survive on. Many of those jobs don't even provide health insurance.

Those that don't make minimum wage are usually able to negotiate their salary. They are free agents so to speak.. Most have skills that allow them to command a certain wage and organizations need those skills, therefore they do not need the government coming in and mandating the salaries...

That being said, workers that must work for minimum wage for whatever reason need interference b/c a lot of companies will try to get away with paying as little as possible and they don't care if the person can afford to survive as long as the work is getting done...

I agree that not everyone that works at minimum wage jobs is unskilled and that some people do work really hard and deserve a raise. I don't believe that it's the governments right or job to say that everyone that was making that wage deserves a raise. Yes, there are a lot of people working lower wage jobs now due to the ecomony, however, this raise started what, two years ago? If they want to raise wages, invest in education and trade or technical schools. It would be better for the whole country in the end and cheaper.

And for the record, I don't technically work in a job where I have "skill". Im in the automotive industry and sell parts. I've worked my way up from minimum wage to what IS a living wage. Or was anyway...

Not really. Minimum wage in Oregon has been $8.40/hr for awhile now. The Federal change makes absolutely no difference.

I have no problem with individual states setting their minimum wage, it's their right. I have a problem with the federal minimum wage being raised the way it has. In Texas it went up in steps from 5.15 to 5.85 to 6.something to 7whatever it is now over right about 2 years to follow the federal laws. IT IS and will make a difference here.
