Sky 8: Drowning search LONGVIEW, Wash. - A 20-year-old Longview man missing in the Cowlitz river was being called a hero by Sheriff's Deputies after they say he rescued a drowning toddler.

Cowlitz County Sheriff's Spokesperson Mark Nelson said 20-year-old Alan Heck dove into the Cowlitz to grab a 3-year-old girl who fell in and appeared to be in distress.

It happened in a swimming area near the Allen Street Bridge around 2:30 p.m.

Heck was able to hand the girl off to someone else, but went under and did not resurface.

A Coast Guard helicopter and Cowlitz County Dive teams searched the water into the night but the search was eventually called off.
