Accompanied by a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage, you must cross the river in order to get home. Unfortunately, you have a tiny boat which only permits you to transport a single load at a time. Therefore, during each trip, you must leae two unguarded on the riverbank while making the crossing. How will you manage to get all of them safely across, without one of them being eaten (the wolf will eat the goat, and the goat will eat the cabbage)?

I take the goat first, then go back empty.
Next I bring the cabbage and bring back the goat. I leave the goat there and bring the wolf. Having the wolf safely united with the cabbage, I go to get the goat. |

You must first cross with the goat and leave it on its own while you cross back.
Then you must bring over the wolf and come back with the goat. You leave the goat and cross over with the cabbage. Lastly, you return alone to the bank you started from and transfer the goat. |
