Hey guys,,, I hope all is well with everyone... I have a question for you guys and I hope there are a few good ideas?

It was too much for me last night into my training...
I have been over doing it I guess? I had 5- 5min rounds with different people last night like I normally do after theory and my other work out... I was doing great until about 3 minutes in on the last round and then both of my calf muscles cramped up to the point I couldn't walk.. I walked it off when they let me and came back to the half mount (in the match) where I was and I went to umpah (escape) and they both cramped up again and now my hamstrings cramped/locked up as well...

I need to start supplementing potassium perhaps? I thought I new every way to take care of leg cramps after the fact... ...but how can I prevent leg cramps in training?
The ones I know are stay hydrated with water, electrolytes, calcium and enough sodium in take, stretch after warm up... But now I am thinking I might need potassium supplements?
I eat some foods that are high in potassium but I'm thinking after my research last night that it's not enough for my training...

Does anyone have advice to prevent leg cramping in sports?
not training is not an option...

....and don't say oh, why don't you take a Midol...ha! ..any good ideas???biggrin

I used to suffer from leg cramps at night...but I took care of it by the methods you've already mentioned...potassium, hydration, & electrolytes... Sowwwwy I can't help you with the sports training thing...

Edited to add: I've heard taters are also a good source of potassium...

Increase water intake, calcium, potassium and magnesium....

Alternate hot and cold on the area that is cramping (20 min intervals)

Make sure to stretch that area really well, if it is still sore or cramping... focus on another area (your body is telling you it needs a rest or do lower impact on that area.... swimming or yoga or low the weight, intensity or frequency in that area)

If you don't back off a little, you are likely to do more damage.

biggrin Thanks for the input guys...biggrin

as for doing yoga and lowering the impact.. I do mix it up like that...however, when I am training in mma some throw moves and escapes put allot of fast stress on the leg muscles.. and they seem to cramp...

Not training is not an option as I mentioned... I have studied nutrition and muscular therapy... I guess I am just looking for something that might help someone out there that I don'[t know of? I have heard alternatives such as pickle juice and tonic water but have not tried that??spock

Sorry guy ... best info I can give you is HYDRATION, being a hockey guy , cramps happen usually from lack of water during practice mostly .. I try to stay away from Power-aids and Gatorades BUT half and half with water could be bestest
Good luck

Check your shoes as well.

This may sound strange but poor foot support can lead to muscles in your foot getting pinched and then the pain just travels up your leg as cramping.

I wouldn't take potassium supplements. If you get too much potassium with pills, that really messes with your heart. Doctors usually prescribe potassium pills. That's nothing to mess around with.

It would be better to start eating a banana a day.

Those cramps are sending you a message - the muscles are tired. Tired muscles that are being asked to do too much, cramp up.

I assume you're doing enough stretch exercises.

When I had patients exercising, sometimes their legs would cramp. We would have them sit down and eat a banana and take a break.

Oh, yeah, no more then one banana a day. They can cause constipation.

That's not strange at all. If you don't have a good foundation with well supporting shoes, you will have problems.

cramping in the legs and feet can also be a sign of poor circulation, no matter how active you are balancing the vitamins and minerals in your system is very important.

Everyone has given you great ideas but you might want to talk to your trainer or a doctor cuz too much potassium can also be harmful

Bananas, OJ, tomatoes, tomato juice. But don't OVERdo it...too much potassium is as bad for your heart as too little (and it doesn't do your kidneys much good either).

by the way, the role of potassium in your system is to regulate your heart beat

too much potassium and your heart stops
