Dodgers' Manny Ramirez suspended 50 games after failing drug test

The Los Angeles Dodgers' Manny Ramirez has been suspended 50 games after failing a test for performance enhancing drugs, according to a report the team's Web site.

The announcement was made shortly after noon eastern time. According to the report, Ramirez says that the positive test came about because of medication prescribed to him by a doctor.

According to the report, Ramirez would be eligible to return around July 3, depending on the number of rainouts the team experiences.

Under Major League Baseball's rules regarding performance-enhancing substances:

* First offense results in a 50-game suspension
* Second offense results in a 100-game suspension
* Third offense results in a lifetime ban
