it depends on the pitch of the blade
in the winter you want it to suck air up and mix the heated air on the ceiling with the cool air from the floor and the mixed air drops along the walls in the summer you want it to push air down and create a breeze |

Gyps, are your blades angled away from the base of the ceiling fan or toward it? That is what quiet meant by the pitch

Turn it off a sec. And look and tell us which way they are angled.
