This poor women is probably sitting in front of her dismantled laptop crying by now. We've told her to download no fewer than 18 separate programs and run all of them at once (most probably have components that run in the background)...and she has to do this with her computer slowing to a crawl...nice.

Go here;

http://majorgeeks.com/Advanced_SystemCare_Free_d5927.html

download and instal Advanced system care free. It is a good program that will scan your system and help find the cookies, registry errors and junk, that is piling up in your system.

Ignore the other programs listed, believe me, this one works and many of my customers ask for this specific program. Another note for you, do NOT update to Internet Exploer 8. If you do, you might as well just shoot you comp. IE8 is so full of holes, that any hacker can slip right through into your system.

Anyone interested in one of the best antipsyware programs, try this one:

http://www.superantispyware.com/?tag=GOOGLE-SUPERANTISPYWARE

It has a free version as well as a professional version. The free version works better than any other spyware sweeper program I have tried. It's not a resource hog either. It also has an option to allow you to protect your homepage when you go online.

haha, you're right. the computer isn't THAT slow, just some pages take a long time to load and startup is slower than it's always been. it's not to a point where i'm crying, just a bit frustrated.

I was under the impression you had tried the spybot/adaware and general cleanup. If you haven't, you should do those things anyhow.

yes i have. spybot/adware used to run automatically with norton, or so i thought. however my subscription had expired and my cable/internet provider was offering it for free.

by the time i'd signed on, they had their own online protection program and when i ran it the first time, it located a lot of spyware. it's still running slow though, even after my having removed all that.

i wonder if i could ask for some help with a VERY slow laptop that hasn't always been this way.

i've tried the defrag and that wasn't the problem. i don't want to restore back to a certain point because this problem has been going on for a LONG time and i'm not sure what a safe restore point would even be.

awhile back, the computer store where i purchased the laptop reformatted my entire hard drive (it was still under warranty back then). i restored my online backup with norton (the folks over there guided me through it but, for some reason, we couldn't find the original backed up files and re-restored it. so, somewhere, there are two files of everything!)

i've gone ahead and deleted some large programs that i didn't use anymore, but i don't think it's a problem with hard drive space.

do the little icons in the bottom right corner mean the ones that are always running in the background? if i deleted some of those, would it help? for instance, what are 'java' and 'quick time' and are they useful to me at all? can i remove them?

thanks, i'd appreciate any help to avoid my having to bring the computer in and pay for a service that might be really easy to fix.

There's really no cut and dry answer here. Your computer could be slow for a variety of reasons. It's probably one of these:

A bad hard drive
Spyware/Viruses
Not enough ram memory
or Antispyware/Antivirus or other program slowing your computer down

I do computers for a living and do some of my work remotely through a service called LogMeIn Rescue. If you wanted, I could log in and diagnose your performance problems for you.

Oh geez, there's your problem. You have Norton, that puppy will eat up your resources like a fat kid on chocolate cake

that it will. a quick look at Task Manager will reveal which prgs are using excess resources.

bottom line though, only a tech sitting at the machine will be able to give you an accurate diag and correction. you can try someone local that you have confidence in, OnForce.com or CrossLoop (many helpers there are still no fee).

in either case, create a new Restore Point and, if possible, backup your files before makng changes.

You need to uninstall that Norton virus scanner. It's sitting in your memory and PC taking up space and memory uselessly.

by the way, if you would trust me enough, I can connect to your PC through remote connection and fix things on it. Contact me through mail if you would like me to help you out. I would tell you what to do to allow me to check out what is wrong. shades

excellent offer and worth a shot at it. if he's any good he'll get a firsthand look at the big picture and not only be able to boost things but advise on how to keep it from happening again.

since most remote connection apps place you in charge while you watch everything thats going on you have the confidence of knowing you can disconnect at any time.

i'm not using norton anymore and have uninstalled all norton/symantec programs. it's my cable/internet/phone provider who is offering the free online protection.

i've located a virus and i'll give them a call in the morning. they'll give me free remote service as well. yesterday they had me manually delete the file and, even though it no longer shows where it indicates, the scan still tells me it's there.

i do appreciate all your help.

And what scan is this? The scan you mean the install/uninstall program list or some specific scanning program?

I don't know who your provider is, but I find it unlikely that they have an online scanner that can protect your computer along with the rest of their customers. I would strongly suggest that you get a stand alone AV program. AVG 8.5 is free and low on resource use, plus is is auto-updating and has an email scanner and spyware scanner as well.
What your provider's AV is calling a virus, may not be. Some files that can't be recognised by and AV scan, are automatically ruled as a virus. Be careful.

the virus scan

i'll see what i can get resolved today but, to be honest, i'd rather just pay the money and take it to a computer expert close-by than start downloading all these programs which i know nothing about.

That would be a good idea....however, if you do not have an antivirus program on your computer, they will probably suggest that you get one.

i think i've mentioned about a 1/2 dozen times or so that i DO have an anti-virus program!

actually, they are having me run the scan in safe-mode, said that often a virus or spyware can't be properly removed unless windows in started in safe mode.

so i'll see what that does. it may warrant another online chat, remote assistance and/or being it in to a tech.

thanks again.

most likely spyware, maleware, greyware........

spybotsearch and destroy will get most of it.

You should check to see if you have an anti-virus program.

my word... how are yall going to trouble shoot someone's computer based on the very relative term of 'slow', without getting specifications from the person? Only 1 time did anyone ask, 'what are you running'.

Lets start over, shall we?

Click 'Start' > 'Run' > type 'dxdiag' > press ENTER or 'OK'

(you may be prompted for some DirectX digital signature, just press click okay)

Now, you should see the DirectX diagnostic Tool.

On the bottom right, Press the button 'Save All Information' > Save it to your Desktop ( Save as Dxdiag.txt )

Now minimize all your windows/dialogs still your see your desktop.

Open The file you just saved ( Dxdiag.txt )> Highlight the lines, starting with Operating System, through Page File> Copy The highlighted section.

Post that information in this room.
