24 yrs old! WTF! That's how old your son/daughter has to be to file for financial aid for college without it being based on your income/tax returns. (18 & 21) ~ They can get married, drink alcohol, join the military & go to war, sign legal contracts as a adult, etc... but NOT STUDENT LOANS?! The only loophole is if they have a child of their own.

Until the age of 24, unless deemed an independent/graduate student, the federal government expects parents to contribute to their children's education.

If the student has a dependent, served in the military or a few other stipulations, they may be considered an independent student.

They can receive fin aid, but EFC (estimated family contribution) will need to be provided by the parents or student.

It sucks but its the way it is!

I think they can also live independently for 12 consecutive months and be considered financially independent, but I don't think dorm life counts.

its based solely on family life. marriage, having a child or turning 25 is the only thing that will eliminate the need for your income.
