I have a problem with a computer I am fixing up for a poor family that cannot afford a new one and would like your help with this problem that I cannot solve before I give it to them.

Before I go please do not suggest to throw it out because it is old or buy a new one, it is something I do for people with no money to help them so give me your advice or help.

Thanks in advance.

Pentium4 2.0ghz Northwood celeron
ASUS P4S533-MX
1290 mo of memory running at 166 mhz
40 gig maxtor HD
ASUS V6800 32 mo VIdeo
Lan ONborad
6 USB 2
LG CD writer
Windows XP Pro version (5.1 2600) Service Pack 3

The problem which does not happen often (once a month average) is that sometimes when you start the computer it starts but doesn't boot until I unplug the power switch from the connectors and plug them back (sometimes have to do it 5 to 6 times before it works) while still plus into the wall, if i unplug it from wall and do the power switch thing it has no effects.

After I do that the computer boots and works splendid no problem.

I check everything - memory sticks change them check them with memory tester software everything great. Check power supply (my first suspect) change it with one I know is good. Checked power management in Bios, put the bios to default even cleared the CMOS. Unplugged everything leaving only CPU, Also tried another power switch I had in stock even switches the power button with the reset button.

Nothing changes until I do the PWR Switch thing It is either a MB malfunction or work from a higher source slaphead

My deduction it is not grounded well when it won't start and me unplugging it and plugging it back while power on activates the ground.

I searched on so many forums and didn't find one similar problem (Unplug Plug PWS)so that is why I am asking you good people here for help.

I could give it to them like that since it works very well 99% of the time and it is free for them so they should not complain but I do not like to give something if I know there is a problem on it.

I would recommend trying a different or new power supply unit. If you have another pc you can borrow a PSU from you could try it and see if it still does it, if it does then it is something in the mother board. When it doesn't start does anything at come on are there any LEDs on or internal fans?

Thanks for the reply,

I did try another PSU and same result and yes everything turns on led fans CD/ROM HD mouse keyboard, just don't hear the first beep signifying boot until I do my little trick.

I know very strange, once started it can be ok for months of ON\OFF no problems then one day oops again have to do my little trick.

Is the mobo properly grounded to the case? Is the mobo touching a part of the case that it shouldn't be touching? Could there be an issue with the BIOS?

If nothing else, there might be an issue with the mobo itself, or the CPU might not be properly seated. The forums at www.maximumpc.com are particularly helpful when it comes to such hardware-related issues.

No POST is usually a bad sign for the mobo.

It really sounds like the motherboard is on it's way into the grave.
Not to mention, having to pull and replace the pins constantly, isn't good for the system either. One wrong move and you can short the whole board out.
