Many years ago I worked in a hospital. At one time they had every employee take 8 hours unpaid time off per month to save money. But when I got paid it put me in a lower tax bracket and I actually came out with $15 more. I never understood how they would save money that way.

I work for a non-profit agency and we have not had raises in several years now. We had our open enrollment for insurance yesterday and what used to cost me $175.00 every 2 weeks for insurance for my family now will cost $350.00 every two weeks. Since it is just me and my daughter, it is $250.00 every two weeks for she and I.

We have gone to voluntary time off w/o pay and since I am salary, I am working ALL overtime since there are no staff allowed to get any OT.

It is not looking good here, either... tears

when a company makes all its employees, on every level/position and in all its plants take two weeks off regardless of whether or not they are eligible to be paid for that time off, or is that just business?

Some plants do that. They shut the whole company down for two weeks in the summer. That's everybody's vacation time. A steel plant by me did that. They've done it that way for years. I think some car plants might do it too.

Winx is correct, ask co-workers if they have done this in the past or if it's a first time. Car companies have done this for years in order to get ready for the new model year.

They company was recently (about a year or so ago) bought by a larger company, and they have been changing the pto/vacation policies frequently since then. It sounds like this is the first time they've tried this.

i worked at a factory that was open for many years...every year, they shut the plant down for one week of mandatory vacation. if you were employed long enough, you were paid for your time off. if you weren't, you missed out.
