Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think I will get quite all the way to the West Coast but I am considering it. |

Crested Butte, Colorado; located on western slope, mountain biking capitol of the US. Great country to see in summer & one of the quieter ski slopes. Some FANTASTIC bars.

I am thinking about a short road trip this summer. What are your suggestions? Which states are the most interesting to drive through? Any cool 'tourist trap' places? Where not to go? |

Hands down tanyaann is the Queen of not beating around the bush. Read this simple straight forward reply; you, like me will chuckle at the brilliance and blunt nature of her one word sentence. tanyaann wrote: I am thinking about a short road trip this summer. I once had to take a road trip to Mt. Hood in Oregon a couple of years ago. It was a pretty neat two-day drive that took me all the way through the "Grapevine"... past Klamath Falls... through the Sisques... and through the immense tree cover and other foliage that is a part of Oregon. Driving the roads leading to the mountain were cool as well, as they were the very ones seen in the opening credits of "The Shining" with Jack Nicholson, as well as the front of the "Overlook Hotel" (the "Timberline Lodge" as it's called in real life).
Now THAT was a drive. |

Heck- they probably wouldn't mind at all. After all- they DO sell "Jack Nicholson slept here" (complete with "Here's Johnny" Shining graphic) souvenir t-shirts, you know?
It should be noted that only the front facade of the Timberline Lodge was used in "The Shining"- they went to some totally different resort hotel-like place for the interior shots. In fact, I believe the place is somewhere in Montana or something. But the road leading up to the mountain from Welches, Oregon (the town closest to Mt. Hood) all the way to the mountain IS showcased in the opening credits of the movie, though. |
