I Thought If I Said I Love You

I thought if I said I love you
You would look at me and say the same
The scene played out in my mind so differently
From what really happened

I said I love you and you looked at me
With a look of profound regret
I tried to take it back by turning it into joke
But we both knew the truth

I smiled a weak smile and laughed a weak laugh
Trying to hide the explosions of pain in my chest
But you saw what I was hiding and I knew you saw
And there was nothing I could do

I wanted slink away and find a place to
Lick my wounds but I was still trying to save face
Trying not to let you see how much
The lack of “I love you too” hurt me to my core

In that moment I died a little inside
And wished to be anywhere but
Sitting there with you looking at me
Wishing those words could be taken back

I thought if I told you I love you
All the feelings I felt would usher in a new freedom
And somehow we would be free together
While our freedom would keep us intertwined

But when I said to you I love you
I could feel another link in the chain of rejection
Wrapped around my heart one more to add to the ones
I thought I would be gone by saying those three little words

I Love You…

So "bitter"sweet,,,,,


I admire that you took the chance you did despite potential outcome, one way or the other
