I have a job offer in Memphis that pays me alot better but Ive never been there. What is Memphis like? Does it have any parks on the river or lakes that have parks on them? I can deal with not having a beach but the lack of water would kill me. The only idea of Memphis I have is what I see on Gangland and from reading the Firm. lol So whos been and what did you think?

I was in Memphis once, years ago, for a weekend. Great bbq and blues bars. There are many parks etc on the river, shouldn't be a problem finding one you like. Aside from that, though, I have no idea what it's like to live there.

Is it possible for you to go for a few days to check it out before you decide?

I've been to Memphis before. It's a cool place- tons of hotspots to go out and have fun in... there's also Graceland as well as the Sun Records building which recorded most of Elvis' greatest hits. There's also one of the Gibson guitar factories there which also comes complete with store and museum (tours, too!!!), and several other music venues.

I've heard that it can get a wee bit rough there though, especially with regard to violent crime, but I personally haven't seen much of anything on that level.

If you're really into water activities, u can always cross the state line into Mississippi. Memphis isn't far from the Grenada, MS area which has tons of parks & water areas to choose from. shades

And -if you feel like doin' some driving- there's also Clarksdale, Mississippi which was essentially ground zero for the modern blues explosion at the turn of the twentieth century. There's even a full-on blues music museum in the center of town, as well as a number of other music-related activities there.

Memphis is another mid sized city. I live 1 county east and it is my goto city. Shelby Farms has one of the largest county parks in any suburban area in the nation. Several small rivers feed the Mississippi River in the area. Tons of small lakes and larger bodies of water within a days drive. Nope no oceans and no mountains. Mostly flat. Good group of talented mountain bikers though and good trails to ride. Visit midsouthtrails dot com for more on the local park systems including hiking and biking trails. You make what you want of where you live.

Not sure what your circumstances or needs are but thought I would throw this out as well. I have a rental property in Memphis that will be available for rent in late July or early August. It is a 3 bedroom 2 bath zero lot line home w/2 car garage and fenced backyard. Rent is 1050/mth and avg utilities are 165/mth for water/sewer/gas/electric/trash. The house is in zipcode 38018. Current tenants move out Jun30.

I lived in the Memphis area (Millington) for several years(about 13 years ago).

There are many places to go as mentioned above. Shelby-Meeman state park is right beside the river... nice place. I learned to drive there... and I only backed into one tree! blushing

Memphis has had it's ups and downs over the years as many places have. Honestly, I'd consider moving back to the area if I didn't already have a good job where I am. You might want to consider some of the outlying areas instead of Memphis proper... but that would depend on where you were working.

There is a great concern venue on Mud Island (on the river, in downtown). Larger acts come there often. There's Beale Street for blues and jazz, there are various clubs, attractions, etc. If you're an Elvis fan there's Graceland. I personally wouldn't go back, but then again I've been so many times when family & friends came to visit that I could do the tour word for word.

Memphis has a lot of offer. I know that many companies are offering a decent wage to bring professionals to the area. It hit a slump a few years back, but is coming back up.

Beautiful city with tons of stuff to do. I walked downtown and followed my nose to some of the best ribs around. Jazz bars are great!

I live in memphis I promise you it sucks! great for tourist but lets put this in perspective we have one of the highest crime rates, are consistantly in the top 5 for murder, dirtiness, and places not wanted to live. Everyone always talks about graceland well it is over rated not to mention in the freakin ghetto(white haven though maybe 2 white people live there) We, get absolutely 0 good concerts except at music fest which just passed. They just took away our only good radio station and replaced it with ESPN radio. We do have more churches and gas stations then any other city in the country. Granted there are safe areas around memphis (Germantown,Bartlett,Collierville, or some palces in Mississippi)We have the most overcrowded jails in the country (just to add to the thought of the crime)

Memphis is a good city to live in... Downtown is full of young people and always has something going on most nights and all weekend. Yes the crime is bad, but isn't it in most big cities? You just have to be careful in the city and outside the city. There is a lot of green in memphis, as someone already mentioned Shelby farms and Meeman Shelby forest. The MS river also has some recreation area. Down south in the delta Mississippi there are several lakes and areas to do outdoor activities- hunting fishing, boating etc... It would be a good move on your part.
