Many of you know Buttercup, my dog, is part Jack Russell, and thus, hyper and happy and has a tendency to jump up when she is approached to be petted. I have not been able to break her of this habit and now just figure it is part of her personality and just warn people ahead of time.

Last night I was out with a few of the neighbors and there were others out strolling, enjoying the wonderful weather. Buttercup was enjoying a romp with her boyfriend here, a little Dachshund named Cuddles. As we were chatting, a little lady no bigger than a minute, in her 80s came walking down the sidewalk with her walker. She is all bent over and very frail and hard of hearing She was approaching Buttercup to pet her, I knew she wouldn't hear my warning and I could not get to Buttercup in time to stop her from jumping on this sweet lady...I feared the worse, that she was going to knock this poor woman to the ground. noway As I scrambled to get to Buttercup the most amazing thing happened. Instead of jumping up as she normally does, Buttercup laid down on the ground and scrunched down as low as she could get, though still wiggling from head-to-toe with anticipation of a little scritch and pat on the head. Buttercup somehow sensed the condition of this lady and accommodated her. It was the most heart-warming scene I've seen for a long time, actually choked me up. Buttercup:heart: got extra hugs and a few extra treats last night.

Hope you'll share your amazing pet stories too!

Lil, beautiful story.

I answered an ad in the paper "free to a good home" and met Larkin. The man told me she was his sons dog and his son had died in a drunk driving accident. Needless to say, she became mine.

She and I were inseperable. I took her everywhere with me. One Christmas I was at my parents and was crying for some stupid reason. My dad went to hug me and Larking lunged grabbing his arm with her teeth. She didn't bite down but he removed his arm very slowly.

I started to scold her and my dad started laughing. He said I used to be worried about you living all by yourself but not anymore. She got lots of treats that night, from him.flowerforyou

She passed away three years ago and I still miss her terribly.

WTG Larkin! Your dad sounds like a great guy to realize Larkin was doing her job and protecting you. I'm sorry you lost such a wonderful companion and friend. I cannot even think of the day that I will lose Buttercup.noway

Robin, I was so glad to hear this was a happy story! We all have come to love Buttercup. What a sweet little dog she is and its amazing what keen senses animals have, she knew the right thing to do and not jump up on the elderly woman. Way to go Buttercup!

Animals have an amazing sense of what is going on.

My dog, Katie, was super spastic most days... but in the days winding down to my Dad's death, she became those most amazing companion for Dad. She walked slowly, leaned next to his chair and followed him everywhere.

We could tell when he was hurting more than usual because she would stay by his side for only so long, then she would come and get me, go to where his meds were, grab the med bag and lead me to him.

When he left to go to the hospital for the last time, she knew. She tried to block him from the door... repeatedly. It nearly broke my heart because I, too, knew he wasn't coming home again. After he died, she refused to leave my side. I guess she felt how bad I was hurting and wouldn't leave me.

A few years later, she was trying to protect me from a rattlesnake in the yard. She got bitten trying to keep it away from me. Unfortunately, the rattlesnake won the battle. That evening that I had to have her put down... it nearly killed me.

So yeah, dogs are amazing creatures.
