I don't think you're giving people much credit. I'd bet that most quality guys (and gals) ARE looking for a partner who has a little bit of both - beauty AND brains, and they do realize that many such people exist. I'd hate knowing that my partner was dating me because he thought I were interesting and intelligent only, yet wished that he could put a paper sack over my head so he didn't have to look at me. Physical beauty, albeit subjective, plays a huge part in whether a person will be attracted to you or not.

We all want to be valued for the person we are. Initially being judged by one's appearance is unfair for both the beautiful and the not so beautiful.

If we were all blind, then we could truly see people for who they are.. wow that would change the world Being visual we judge visually. If we were blind we'd find something else to judge. Smell, vocal tone, etc.

There has to be some sort of physical attraction upon first meeting someone or you wouldn't approach them otherwise. You get to know the person and their inner beauty as you continue to date. I wouldn't want to be in a relationship where I wasn't physically attracted to him and I hope the same were true for his thinking.
