I've got a few questions. Most recipes call for baking apples like Granny Smith so they stay firm. Are red apples (Red Delicious I guess) going to be too mushy? Does the crust brown inside the bag? or do you have to take the bag away for awhile? Did you sprinkle sugar on the crust?

u ask TOO many questions....Go buy an apple pie!noway

when the bag starts smoking! laugh actually, the 1 hour was perfect and seriously, the bag didn't smoke until the last 30 seconds, which might have just been the filling that spilled over and saturated the bottom a bit. i was really skeptical of the bag in the oven, but i watched it closely and it was fine. and the topping got nice a crispy and browned a bit too!

My old roomate who is from the South, where they bake a lot of pies told me the secret to making the best apple pie is to use as many different kinds of apples as you can find so u get the taste and texture of each one. She did make the best apple pie ever!

Personally I like Granny Smith the best but yeah the more variety for the pie, the better.

That's the way my mom taught me as well, tart and sweet, juicy vs not as juicy, you get great flavor and texture that way with minimal ingredients, just 4 or 5 different apples, a teeny bit of sugar, lots of cinnamon and nutmeg. Pour into crust and bake.

I don't use a recipe and don't have proportions, just do til it looks and smells right

When going to the grocery for apples for your pie, look for ones called "Ida Red". Try them, you'll not be disapointed. bigsmile

They are in stores about the same time Winesaps are in the store.
