since she is not saying everyone has to leave their shirt untucked...so what. she doesn't want her daughter's shirt tucked in because of her beliefs...so what. again, it's not forcing everyone to untuck their shirts

Isn't that teaching the child to not follow the rules?

I truly feel sorry for this child and the negative attention that they are receiving.

Did you miss this part of the article?

"School board president Jerry Christian supported her request and said the student handbook for parents doesn't even mention anything about tucking shirts in."

The mother raised a stink about it. That's negative attention for the child.

I can just see it now, one kid has only one shirt sleave. One kid has his or her shirt untucked. One kid is only allowed to have one pant leg long.. Another must wear some sort of covering to hide their face or hair.

Geez why don't we just send kids to school in large garbage bags, covering all their body parts, that way other kids don't know they have bodies under them.. ugh. I see the practical aspect of uniforms but not the antiquated reasoning for untucked shirts and head coverings. Maybe all religions need to evolve..

School is school, religion is religion, keep it seperate.

When I was in school I had to wear a braid, my mother braided my hair so tight I thought I was Chinese for at least 4 years at one school. I got punished big time when I took the braid out. I took the punishment just to relieve the headaches. I suffered horrible headaches from it for a long time, talk about focus I thought I had two nuns teaching me some days... lmao

Ok don't beat me up too bad, I'm old...

I love the loose interpretations of the separation clause.

I don't know if you know this or not, but the constitution provides freedom of religion. It doesn't say you have to leave your beliefs behind when you exit your house.

This doesn't have a damn thing to do with the school imposing a religion on the students.

Teaching a child their body is wicked, unclean, should be covered...all of that is disturbing and disgusting.

In an attempt to shelter the child you are in fact sexualizing them, teaching them shame and creating a poor body image.

Public schools are a local issue and I would have it no other way. If you dont like whats happening in "Your schools", get involved..Which is what the parents did!

When was the last time anyone was at a School Board meeting?

I personally like the schools my kid attended..

Yupper that is the way I was brought up, and my mother's mother too, and it always worked the opposite. Newer generations are fighting that puritanical control, but there is such a thing as going to far the other way too. Balance would be nice. But most of the time if you are too restrictive it will backfire.

I see the world as trying to find balance between the far right and the far left. Eventually we will have no choice BUT to find balance or kill eachother.

I'm not sure what you are getting at here. I think it's negative attention for her child.

Yes, the law suits are excessive, IMO. Yes, they affect the children.

haha Are we related Boo?

I had braids too that were so tight when they went in my vision was blurred. A girl didn't go to school without her hair bound up and her clothing properly assembled. Not good girls from good families anyway.

Of course those were the days when girls were not allowed to wear pants to school. So there I was in a skirt with a sort of a undershorts that made the winter walk somewhat warmer little white socks and saddle shoes. In the worst winter weather the saddle shoes were covered with rubber boots.

I remember the sensation of the cold to this day. The lace on undershorts stiff and scratching my thighs with the stiff tops of the boots cut into my calves. Michigan winters and long walks made those mornings hard to forget.

I remember hearing the news in 5th grade that pants would be allowed for girls! I think I whooped out loud. Something children in school rooms didn't do then especially girls.

It was the beginning of a new time. Pants became jeans and the hair was loose, long and wild at times. Self expression was the rule of the day and we weren't concerned about labels or styles. Anything goes...long skirts, short skirts, jeans...like I said before...we all knew there was plenty of time in the future to wear the work uniform. Now...kids...go little future corporate slaves are being stuffed into uniforms practically at birth.

That is what it is all about you know? Uniformed corporate slaves...conformity...march in lock step..do not express yourself, do not question authority, do not find joy and beauty in the human body...assimilate...feel shame...feel fear...you are easier to control that way.
