Buddha means "Awakened" or "Enlightened One." It was the title given to Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. The majority of Buddhists believe that there have been, and will be in the future, many other Buddhas. Some even claim that Jesus was a Buddha.

Although Buddha was born before Jesus many scholars believe that Jesus in his missing years travelled to India to learn from monks about the benefits of resolving peacefulness of the mind, soul, and body and to eventually become enlightened. When he came back as an young adult to his hometown he tried to teach his people that one can live in peace together.

There are many recorded utterances from the Buddha that seem to have been mirrored hundreds of years later by Jesus.

For example, the Buddha said, "Everybody fears being struck by a rod, Everybody fears death. Therefore, knowing this, feeling for others as for yourself, don't kill others or cause others to kill." (The Dhammapada 10:1).

Jesus said, "And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise." (Luke 6:31).

Another example:

The Buddha said, "Of what avail is thy matted hair? Of what avail is they antelope hide? Within you there is a forest of defilements. You deal only with outside." (The Dhammapada 26:12)

And Jesus said, "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves." (Matthew 7:15).

So was Jesus a Buddha? I personally believe he was very enlightened and tried to teach a more peaceful way of life that doesn't judge or condone people to brutal punishments.

Did his attempts succeed?

Many would say no, because of the atrocities happening in the name of Christianity around the world. Some would say yes it is going as planned.

In the end what can you personally take as a positive note from both Buddha's and Jesus's teachings?

Scholars disagree about the date, but not the place, of the Buddha's birth. The place was in the kingdom of Sakyas, on the border of present day Nepal and India. The date was either around 448-368 or 563-483 before Jesus was born.

Many people believe what you started and many have different stories to go with why they believe God created everything. With the study of mythology and theology you will find it interesting and can even connect the pieces of a huge puzzle or find many similiarities to them.

Buddhism doesn't believe in a divine God on clouds though. It is unique practice of self preservation, compassion, and ideals that help live a life away from suffering through finding the middle way towards enlightenment.

Of course there are other spiritual practices that are very interesting that include those that predate any mediterrenean mythology that have very peaceful practices that allows us as humans to coexist in peace.

One can study a lifetime and only touch the surface of the 4000 and more faith systems practiced on this planet.

In the end what is important is whatever you believe in serves you well and you can wake up each morning smiling to give out positive energy to whomever you meet each time.

I hope you find your "bliss" and enjoy the time you are here on this planet. drinker

On a more serious note, I do believe that Jesus may have been a student of Buddhism, and that what he was teaching is not well reflected in what we think of as modern Christianity. This is not to say that modern Christianity is wrong or bad. There have been many good things done by followers of the religion. I just think that Jesus was teaching a rather different way than what is taught today. I also believe that each "religion" has a small part of the truth, and we will never see the whole, big picture if we limit ourselves to any one religious path.

Of course Jesus and Buddha are one in the same. All humans are a manifestation of God.

Did not even Jesus teach this?

"Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

I agree completely. Modern day Christainity is the antithesis of Jesus. But then so is much of the demagoguery that's actually written in the gospels. For the gospels are not the word of Jesus, but rather the hearsay blaspheme of arrogant mean who used him as a dead marionette doll for their own agenda. ohwell

This I believe.

I think several beliefs say that if you want to find and identify with the higher power, you should look within.

Yep:

"Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."

Jesus taught the same things that are taught in the Faery Teachings.

The kingdom of all creation is within us. bigsmile

Praise be to the Faeries!

They knew the truth all along.
