Are you advertising anywhere? Or just kinda word of mouth?

Right now, word of mouth. There is a lot of competition out here.

there always is - but you'll discover there are a LOT of morons out there with a hammer and a pickup truck who call themselves "contractors" but who really have no idea what they're doing

I could tell you stories about jobs I bid on after a "certified contractor" or "licensed electrician or plumber" had already bollixed things up.

Oh, yeah. I had a job bid like that. Tree trimming.

Well what about that guy you helped just last week? You said he didn't have a clue what he was doing. Is he in the business or was he just doing this job for a friend?

People who didn't like my prices were told I charge extra when I have to come back and clean up someone else's mess.

The guy is an idiot!
I don't want to be associated with him in any way!

Trust me Pol - the home improvement business is FULL of idiots just like him...

and far worse

I remodeled a bathroom that another "contractor" had just remodeled a couple years before. I couldn't figure out why the fiberglass tub surround was so wobbly on the end. I pulled off the drywall next to it and discovered the "contractor" had put NOT ONE... NOT TWO... but THREE screws through the flange into NOTHING.

There was NO STUD there but he went ahead and put screws in as if there were.

That's just one example of many.

Yeah, I have cleaned up after some of the idiots. I don't usually like to take those jobs. But, its money.

The biggest thing I had to overcome was to not be afraid to bill what it's worth. I was stuck in "employee" mentality from working for other people all those years. Sure $50 an hour sounds like a lot and sounds like a great living until you realize how many incidental expenses you have running a business. Then you realize that $100 or so an hour isn't unreasonable.

Heck, some plumbers charge twice that.

Oh, I don't skimp on the billing. And I show progress to give the customers warm fuzzies.

Good idea.

A lot of customers are stuck in "employee mentality" too I've found. I've learned to avoid those people.
