A 7-month-old boy has died after being attacked by two pit bull dogs belonging to his grandmother in San Antonio.
Police Chief Bill McManus says the grandmother was getting ready to feed the boy Tuesday morning and went to her kitchen for his bottle. When she returned her dogs were attacking the baby. The woman got a knife and stabbed one of the dogs, and got the child away. The chief says the dogs then attacked the grandmother before she managed to get them outside. Police killed the dogs in her backyard. Authorities said the child was dead at University Hospital. Police said the grandmother was being treated at the hospital. Police did not identify the family or say if charges would be filed. |

That is SO HORRIBLE!!! I don't care what any owner says about a tame upbringing.... it's in the nature of the beast. There are homeowner's policies that exclude coverage for certain types of dogs, like this, because of their nature.

Its terrible that the child died like that. Unfortunately still is the bad rap that Pit Bulls as a breed get. The name Pit Bull is applied liberally to any dog with the physical characteristics of the breed and does not exactly encompass any specific breed. There used to be three recognized breeds of Pit Bull but now that name is applied to anything these days that remotely looks like one.
Pit Bulls do not rampage like that except for two reasons: Inbreeding, and dogs trained to be vicious. Friends of mine had Pits that I either trust or don't. The ones I trust I can let near my throat and it is quite plain to me they are love dogs, not fighters or killers. People who train their dogs to be vicious are losers who don't think that their Protection can easily be dealt with by a gun or a wrist rocket, or my personal favorite, a Baseball bat! the first one works best against stupid dog owners as well. I am curious how the dogs were raised. I also got to feel sorry for the parents of the child. I bet the news hit them very hard. If they were neglectful of the dogs or trained them to be vicious then I retract any feelings of sympathy but if the dogs did indeed attack out of the blue then the parents need all the help they can get right now. |

There are homeowner's policies that exclude coverage for certain types of dogs, like this, because of their nature. It's still not right to blame the breed. I know of more vicious breeds than Pitbulls. See...it's frustrating how the media always focuses on stories like this. I was around Pitbulls throughout my childhood, never even came close to being attacked...but almost had my arm taken off by a Husky (still have the scars from it too). And it was the grandmothers fault for leaving the child alone with the dog (the same reason I was attacked by the Husky...my mom left me alone with the dog). It doesn't matter what breed it is. She should have taken the kid in the kitchen with her. This kind of stereotyping of breeds really needs to stop. *edit* - Andy brought up a good point. If the dog had a bad owner (again..it doesn't depend on which breed) the dog will be more likely to be aggressive. IT IS THE OWNER NOT THE BREED!!! I'm also curious as to how and who raised the dogs in this story. |

I'm also curious as to how and who raised the dogs in this story. Not stereotypes if they are true. I definitely would NOT STOP dissuading people from having pit bulls as pets. Because of their nature and the breeding habits put on them, they are not to be trusted. Yes, shame on people who make it all worse and shame on anyone leaving an infant prone with ANY dog. But my opinion stands and has merit regardless of any conjecture on your part. |
