but just like in america...you can talk until you are blue in the face and it doesn't matter. without a cure...it's an uphill battle An uphill battle is still worth fighting if the lives and suffering of hundreds of millions are at stake. So instead of dumping time and money into Africa, shouldn't we be working on a cure instead? Just a thought. |

finding a cure would be worth it instead of providing condoms (that don't always prevent it anyway) and hope that people use them

So instead of dumping time and money into Africa, shouldn't we be working on a cure instead? Just a thought. EXACTLY that is the best way to help them...and in my eyes cheaper in the long run to our economy!

I certainly don't want that. A single pronged approach to a complex problem is rarely the answer. In this case it's 3 pronged. Treatement, prevention, and cure. But really what is being asserted in this thread is that we can't afford to be helping these people. And I just disagree. I feel that we are compelled to help them. In 2005 close to 20% of South Africans were infected. Swazliland was over 30%. There are around 25 million infected in Africa comparted to an estimated 700,000 in the U.S. The numbers are staggering and the impact is far reaching, leading to destabilization and extended extreme poverty. In my opinion we cannot afford not to help. |

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President-elect Barack Obama doesn't often offer praise for President George W. Bush's foreign policy, but on Monday he offered the outgoing head of state accolades for battling AIDS in Africa.
"I salute President Bush for his leadership in crafting a plan for AIDS relief in Africa and backing it up with funding dedicated to saving lives and preventing the spread of the disease," Obama said in taped remarks to the Saddleback Civil Forum on Global Health. The videotape was played during a forum marking the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day, established by the World Health Organization to raise awareness about the disease. Under the Bush administration, more than 2 million people infected with HIV -- most of them in Africa -- have received lifesaving anti-retroviral treatment as part of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR. In July, Bush signed legislation re-authorizing the program and authorizing up to $48 billion to expand it. |

And we have no problem with giving $48 billion dollars to help another country when we cut funding in the US and we are the leading country to discover treatments and research? In our economy. 48 billion sure would help the american people who are ill here and those who are losing their jobs. |

I have always understood the gravity of this illness as I know people afflicted with it. I also have great sympathy and empathy for those affected/afflicted with it in Africa.  That being said. I have issue with focus and funding of HIV/AIDS in Africa being so great.  In the US we continue to cut funding every year for programs that can help people with HIV and HIV research. And statistics are growing each year of new infections. What happened to the theory of getting your own house in order before you reach out to others on a massive scale? Especially with the economic status of our country.  What's your take?  I agree that we should make our country strong first. But, under our president , don't expect anything but MORE being taken from our economy and being dumped into a different country. With his record, I see him draining a lot for his pet projects. Still waiting to see when he will do something positive for this country, instead of all this negative and wanting to steal from the people and make the fat cats richer. I have issue with focus and funding of HIV/AIDS in Africa being so great. In the US we continue to cut funding every year for programs that can help people with HIV and HIV research.
