In caring for my Dad when he was dying and shortly after his death I was suffering from depression and was feeling a little out of control. After talking with my family physician, I was put on Prozac.

Shortly thereafter,I noticed that I was more alert and aware of what was going on around me. I honestly think it did help to kind of kick-start me back into real life. After I started feeling a little more in control, I worked with my doc to taper off and eventually stop taking the medication.

I feel that it was a good choice at the time for me to take the meds to "even out" even though I normally refuse most medications because I hate to have that crap in my system. I normally take a more holistic or alternative medicine approach.

I took Prozac a long time ago, when I was in my second marriage. I didn't like it. It only seemed to make me more okay with being abused. noway frustrated
I hope I am never so depressed again in my life. I'm glad there are things out there to help those who really need it. But, boy, that was certainly the wrong medication for me, and I will try my darnedest to avoid anti-depressants.

I'm REALLY glad it worked correctly for you, though. Don't get me wrong!!!

Yeah, that's the thing, not every medication is going to work for everyone. That's where the person needs to be proactive in his own healthcare and step up and say something. If the side effects are worse than the problem, that's probably not the medication for you. I know I had issues with zoloft but the lexapro I don't have any problems with. Sometimes it's a trial and error but for most people with ongoing problems, it's worth the effort.

Absolutely true. I've been prescribed many different types of anti-depressants over the years...often with bad results. They make so many different kinds now cuz' what works for one won't necessarily work for another....so the Dr's. gamble really.

Check out Dr. Peter Breggin's website. I was diagnosed with Atypical depression, I asked them what that was and they said I have every symptom of depression except I am not sad. The pills put me to sleep and gave me akathesia so I stopped taking them, I didn't understand why I needed them, I wasn't sad or anything. I have seen to many instances of someone's behavior bothering someone else so they force them to see a doctor. I think if my behavior bothers you, maybe you should take a sedative. WARNING: I am a goof ball, deal with it and don't try to control me.

There's no doubt that they are over prescribed. Prozac was the biggest selling drug on the market until Viagra.
