A friend of mine went down to Tenessee for a graduate school visit. She has children, so she always asks about the surrounding public schools. She found out they are still segregated. I was completely floored to hear that there are segregated public schools in Tenessee. Maybe because I have living up north my whole life, it is shocking.

Are public schools still segregated where you are?

Nope.....never even heard of a segregated school being out here....though I have no doubt that they exist.

Never had a concept till I hit Greek Fest in Norfolk Virginia when I was in the military....

A couple of the black guys on the ship suprized me with "Krupa! Come to Greek Fest with us"

I went...I had no idea that it was a huge street party for all black colleges in the area. When you are the only white guy in a sea of black...you quickly figure out that blending in is the best policy.

I had a great time. I met plenty of really cool people. I had my first sex on the beach and figured out that sand on your stuff don't help. (Even if it does look sexy in pictures)

Segregation isn't something I would agree with...however...segregation is more a matter of predominant racial/financial populations in a certain region.

If you got more black kids..it is a black school.
If ya got more white kids....it is a white school...

it is what it is.

Yep so did I. She said that they were busing kids, but that had recently stopped. They claim it's the case of socio-economic status. She asked 'if a black family were able to afford a house in the rich neighborhood, how would they be treated'. The people she asked at the college stated that they didn't know.

From what she told me, it was clearly separated. (mostly by economical status supposedly)

She was told the public schools were segregated. There is the rich white schools and the poor black schools.

they aren't truly segregated...the problem is that white people choose to live in one area and the African American in another part of town. Since, schools are divided by the areas in which we live, some of them do end up segregated because of this. It is by choice of where they are living though and not forced.

I can understand that....

I went to a high school that had a reputation for being wealthy and elitist.....and really white.

Sure, alot of the parents from that area were suburbanites and ...frankly, pretty well off.

I was one of the poor kids. But, because I went to that school..it was automatically assumed that I was a rich kid...

Black or white..Rich or Poor....Urban or Rural...different systems will inherently delineate themselves.

Let's face it....we ain't all the same. Niether are our communities.

I haven't heard of segregated schools still, but here in Toronto, they have "afrocentric" public schools which have the same basic curriculum as every other public school, but also an emphasis on black cultural studies.

I live in Detroit. All the schools here are 'afrocentric'.
