Give them the chair. Make them ride the lightning. I also support removing warning signs and labels from almost everything. If somebody gets killed for going the wrong way on the freeway, that's what nature intended.

noway

sarcasm...

actually maybe it is a good thing as long a it is sealed when they turn 18 like other juvi records

they need to learn there are`consequences for their actions

unfortunately, robin, it's not sealed or removed.

right now, teenagers are looking at a lifetime of being labeled a sex-offender, just because they were stupid one night and sent a partial-nude to their boyfriend/girlfriend.

adults do so all the time, but they don't face charges like child pornography. that's a biggie that taints a person for good.

good to see you.

Shouldn't this thread technically be moved to Parenting?

it has nothing directly to do with parenting. it's supposed to be about the legal consequences of texting inappropriate material.

you are right...sorry about getting off topic.

i think having them as registered sex offenders is a bit extreme. starting out maybe with fines then move up from there. but how do the authorities even know they sent pictures anyway?

Supposedly; if the kid is caught using the phone...the school can look up all they have said and done and go from there.

i don't know if that is a school policy or what? the school district here will take up the phone and make the parens come and get it. i know i would be yelling (not only at my son for using it at school) but at the teachers that invaded his privacy

Isn't there a point where enforcing the law to protect a minor trumps any perceived privacy interests? I could see getting bent out of shape over a violation of privacy between two consenting adults, but we're talking about kids here.

As far as I'm concerned, kids have no privacy rights. At least not concerning anything done outside of the home. That would include sending pictures over cellphones or webpages like facebook.

which is the parents job. i have no problem with them taking up the phones and making the parents come and get them. maybe if the parents had to get them...they will get tired of it and do something about the child using it. but who my son has called is none of their business.

but i don't know of any school here that goes through a phone....they just take them up

According to the news I heard...it is done upon the schools descrection. I am under the premise that its a rule that they aren't to be on in school anyway.

I'll be damned if I would make a trip to the school to pick up a cell phone that was supposed to be turned off anyway. I could give a damn about a childs privacy while at school or at home. I mean yeah, in their room, taking a bath etc...My child...(a child) has as much privacy as they deserve.

That cell phone belonging to a child is usually owned by the parent. Wonder where that puts the responsibility?

My sister goes into her daughters phone and reads her messages when she feels the need. It is her right as a mom and phone bill payer. She reads the number of times she calls a number she doesn't know and where it is made to. Then she questions her on it. She usually gets lies...then just enough truth to try and slide by her.

I personally would be glad to hear that the schools are taking enitiative to do something and let me as a parent know what is going on at school.

my son knows the rules and knows if he breaks them...he faces the consqences at school and home. the schools here can have phones (in case they need them before or after school) they can't have them on during school.

yes it is up to the school. i check on my son and he knows if he says he is going to be somewhere...i might drive by to check. the reason they keep the phone is IF the parents want them back....the parents have to get it. the schools let the parents know....it's up to the parens to do something.

schools can't baby sit. parents need to do it

just a point to ponder

should not those that confiscate said phones and circulate said pictures that are on the private property of the person the picture is of be charged with the distribution of child pornography

this govt is becoming way over bearing on the citizenship -- maybe china's human rights accusation should be taken seriously

but hey what do i know

You are right to an extent yellow...but the schools used to have much more authority than it does now. We KNEW without a doubt we had severe consequences to pay when they spoke. Parents used to be much more envolved than many are now. That is the truth hon. So many parents dont seem to have the time to parent where it counts.

You sound like a parent that is involved with the child. I applaud you. My sisters kids also knew of the "consequences", but it didn't do much good. While there were times they were caught hands down...more times than not...they got away with things that needed to have certain consequences.

Here; schools do not allow phones on their person or on at anytime during school. Know what? They are on all the time. Kids are talking texting and do god know what during school. The schools have had many talks about it. Parents sign and know these rules. They do not make them follow those rules.

We went in not to read what she was doing...not to see what, but when she was doing it. 21 texts during school. That was inbound.

Kids are cunning...I know. I was one.

Not to mention; I raised a few.

i agree, robin.

at seventeen, i had my own place. i guarantee you that if i had taken nudies of myself, i would have considered them MY property, not child porn. how violating for someone to take them, view them, and then arrest you for having them...why not get them for looking?

ok maybe i'm old fashion....but....why do kids need to be able to text anyway????

when i got a phone for my son....i let him know it is for me to contact him #1....for him to contact family #2, for him to talk to friends #3

that order.

when my niece got texting....the phone replaced one of her hands.

I don't plan on getting my child a cell phone for quite a few years. I don't care how much hollering I get for it. And...when I get one...it will be one of those phones that can only call a couple of numbers - me and grandparents.

so what is the thinking from parents that give the kids texting???? if they can't call and talk to someone....then that isn't teaching them social skills IMO.

the parents should take the texting away from those kids that send the pictures etc. i know if a girl sent a picture like that to my son....i wouldn't be a happy camper. or if he sent a picture like that....i would take his texting away and watch him like a hawk.

although i do watch him and he knows it, which is why he doesn't even try to get away with things now....i'm a step ahead of him because i know the tricks because i've done them. and the only reason he has a phone is in case he gets done with something early and needs to be picked up or in case someone needs to get in touch with him.
