Nine workers hospitalized after refinery acid leak
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Nine workers at Sunoco Inc's 335,000 barrel per day refinery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania were treated for exposure after an acid release Wednesday morning, according to a source familiar with refinery operations. There was no information available on the condition of the workers who were exposed to hydrofluoric acid nor on the impact to production from the refinery. A company spokesman was not immediately available for comment. (Reporting by Janet McGurty) This makes me sick. This is a very real threat for all those Techs that work for these refineries. This acid enters into the skin of these workers. They have to wear sensors around their necks for the "in case this happens" condition. This acid gets into the organs after it gets into the skin, it burns the lungs and does lots of damage. Around these refineries when a truck is making a delivery; they have to strategically place law officials and watch closely the route to follow. They are in "ready" to police and evacuate the city close to it's "possible" spill. This stuff is what our people must face to make sure we have gas for our cars, diesel for cars and trucks and much more. Our cities and families are in peril everytime these trucks come into town. Or travel our highways. Not to mention if an explosion takes place at the refinery. Of course this insn't the only poison traveling our roads, railways, and waters. I pray for these people to recover. Oh and these people only make about 30 to 40 dollars an hour...compared to auto workers making up tp 100? Kat |
